Food Scene

A lovely environment, especially great for a relaxing reasonably priced lunch. Food quality is exceptional and much of the produce comes from their own extensive garden.

Lime Wood is one of the retreats of the stars. Go at lunchtime, but you must book. Excellent lunchtime 2 course meals for £21 but weekdays only. Very good value and outstanding quality from celebrity chefs. Our French friends wished they had a restaurant as good as this near their home, praise indeed.

Setley Ridge Vineyard is only a couple of minutes walk from our house. They grow their own grapes behind the shop. You can sample their lovely wines and there's an excellent delicatessen too. There's Setley Garden Centre alongside with Rosie Lea's, a very popular tea shop on the premises.

Shopping

Jennings is a traditional bakery. Their bread and cakes are to die for, but do go early because they close at 2pm on a Saturday and often sell out in the morning. Their Granary Bloomer is just gorgeous.

Sightseeing

Beaulieu is a pretty village only 6 miles away via a picturesque forest drive. The Motor museum is very good, and Beaulieu Garage is worth a visit to see the classic cars both for sale and for daily hire. There's also a good garden centre with a very popular cafe. You can take a forest and riverside walk from Beaulieu Village to Bucklers Hard where there is an excellent museum and harbour.

Hurst Castle, situated at the mouth of the Western Solent with breathtaking views of the Needles, is only a 15 minute drive away. From the car park walk along Hurst Spit with the sea on both sides to reach the castle. During the summer you can save the 45 minute walk along the Spit and get the ferry from Mudeford Quay to the Castle. Built by Henry VIII to protect the Solent from French and Spanish invasions, it was a continuously manned garrison until 1956, however the canons were never fired in anger throughout it's 410 years as a garrison.
