Sightseeing

La Chocolatera is the point of land that sticks furthest out into the Pacific Ocean from Ecuador (the second furthest point on the continent ). It is a famous place, not just because of that, but also for its dangerous reputation. The waves here crash against the rocks with a ferocity little known along the Ecuadorian cost and create a white foam that rarely leaves the surface of the ocean. The location is also stunning for the stark contrast between the brilliant blue of the sky, the darker blue of the ocean, and the golden yellows of the desert soil. You are likely to see a lizard, cactus, varieties of birds (ie: Blue- footed boobies), sometimes whales jumping out of the water.

La Loberia is a small but interesting destination on the coast of Ecuador, next to La Chocolatera . There is a boardwalk between the two sites. The point coming here is to the see sea lions and what is interesting about it, is that this colony generally live and breed further south in Peru and Chile (Pacific) or in Uruguay and Argentina (Atlantic). This is the further north these animals roam. We have learned that they don't breed in Ecuador. They are transitory visitors looking for easy prey (fish, anchovies, octopus). This small corner of Ecuadorian coast is protected by law and nature making it difficult, if not impossible, for fishermen to harvest in the area
