Ok, here is our best kept secret. Just a flight of stairs away from the flat is Mesa de Frades. Yes it is a restaurant, with simple traditional Portuguese food and great red wine, but it is also the best place in town for Fado, the Portuguese music loved worldwide. Late in the evening, famous Fado singers and guitarists join others in a close and intimate experience of beautiful live music with a mellow vibe. It's a small place, so make sure you get there early or make a reservation to make sure for an unforgettable night. Madonna recently sang there with Celeste Rodrigues, sister of the late iconic fado singer Amália Rodrigues. If you're lucky, you might just be in the right place at the right time.

Another one of our favorites, Chapitô is a unique place. A school of arts and home to original exhibitions and alternative cultural events, it has a very cool restaurant with a superb view over Lisbon. It has a mellow and easy-going vibe, super casual. It's a bit touristy nowadays, and could get packed, so get there early. Food is great. Located just by the São Jorge Castle.

A beer museum and restaurant. Seriously, what more do you need? They have what we consider one of the best pastel de bacalhau ever. That's a cod fish cake in case you're wondering. Sounds crazy, but it's really crazy good. Located in the main city square by the river [Praça do Comércio]

What used to be a brothel popular with sailors in the old days is now one of the coolest and most original spaces in Lisbon's nightlife. It's eclectic, burlesque and just beautiful. A unique place for hanging out and for a drink or two. One of our favorite night places. It could get quite packed on weekend nights.
