Trattoria with pasta, meat and fish dishes available too. Specials change weekly so I really don't know what to recommend. Been going there for years and rarely disappointed. Gets busy on weekend evenings so call to book if possible. Since 2022 they no longer do pizzas. (18 minutes walk)

After visiting Valletta, stop here for a ftira - a maltese bread speciality somewhat like a pizza and a glass of wine. Genuine traditional food. PS One ftira will probably feed two ;) Enjoy it! (Valletta is 20 minutes away by bus + 15 minutes walk)

If you're in Mdina, try to get lucky and find a table on the terrace overlooking a view of half of Malta. They also have inside tables with a view for a rainy or windy day.

When it comes to Maltese food, this is one of the best. It is in a narrow alley just off Bisazza street. Specials change every day and are well priced - we always try these and we highly recommend you do too. Busy in the weekend all the year round so phone ahead to book. Great for winter evenings! Small restaurant in Balluta serving Maltese and Italian plates. Location is central and the tables outside in summertime offer a pleasant environment, just suitably removed from the noise of the main road. Try the specials if you can. Service attentive and prompt. (10 minutes walk)

Try the Maltese pastizzi. There are two staple alternative fillings - ricotta (cheese) and pea. (I stay away from the newer "chicken"-filled ones.) Most people order 2 or 3 per person. Qassatat are larger than pastizzi and come with ricotta or pea filling. (2 minutes walk)

Sightseeing

Lots of places to view here depending on your tastes. Lose yourself walking about from one side overlooking Sliema and Marsamxett harbour, to the other side overlooking the Grand Harbour and the Three cities. However, St John's Cathedral and the view from the Barrakka are not to be missed.

The old Maltese capital - a silent, walled city. Great views from the bastions. Several cafes and restaurants though we recommend Fontanella for its views of half the island from above the Mdina Walls. Just 5 minutes outside the Mdina Gate, look for the totally unrefined but delicious Is-Serkin for the best pastizzi ("rikotta" or "pizelli") on the island.

Much of this walled town was flattened in WW2, but there are still sights to see especially down by the waterfront. Great views over the harbour and a decent number of places to eat and drink too.
