Within walking distance, Gramma's kitchen has all you could want for breakfast and lunch. They are open for dinner on Friday and Saturday. I like the ono fish platter with hash browns. Their Portugues soup is really good too.

The Cookhouse is my favorite place to eat after a hike into Waipio Valley. They have all the burgers, and platters, with few Veggie options you can eat. Their fried lumpia with banana and vamilla ice cream is a must.

The Coffee Company is in a cute place surrounded by gift shops. It's a great place to get a good cup of coffee....better than Starbucks and has a local atmosphere. The food is great too. Good items for breakfast and lunch.

Waipio is great for a day hike. Go to the black sands beach. The host has details on how to hke to Nineve falls. It's not for the faint of heart and requires some shoes for crossing rivers and sometimes hiking through muddy conditions.

Beach 69 in Puako Bay, is really my favorite spot for snorkeling. If you need to rent snorkel gear, the best place is not far from here, called Bob's snorkel shop, near the harbor. The beach is lined with trees, so staying out of the sun is easy on this beach.

Mauna Kea is about an hour, plus, drive from The Hibuscus House. We've had guests of varying types go there. One guest actually parked at the visitor's center and hiked up to the top (five hours). To get to the top requires 4 wheel drive. Other guests have been happy to go to the visitor's center, watch the sunset and then star-gaze for hours.

I love Richardson because they usually have a lot of turtles. Bring good water shoes because the tide pools are volcanic, but teaming with life. The small beach is a great launching point for snorkeling too.

J.J's, now called the Country Market, has better meat than Malama Market. Sometimes they have good mini quiches, which are a good option if you don't want to cook, or deal with a long wait at Gramma's kitchen.
