Beaches

A half-day trip with walk +/-picnic at Greenwhich is well worth it. We think it's one of the most beautiful places in the world. Incredible white sand beach and parabolic dunes await after a pretty 2K walk in from the parking lot and across a winding boardwalk over the beautiful marsh. No bathrooms or garbages though so you have to be prepared to pack out what you pack in and hit the bathroom at the top of the trail after the parking lot if necessary!  It’s just outside of St Peter’s which is a sweet little town with some great shops (check out Freckles and Porcelain) and a dairy bar across from a lovely little bay.

Brackley Beach is another lovely white sand beach with dunes as far as the eye can see. It has bathrooms/changerooms and a canteen so is super family friendly but also a little busier during the summer months. Just a short drive down the breathtaking causeway is Covehead with its famous lighthouse and Richard's, who make the best fish and chips on the Island. Just a bit farther down the road from Covehead is Dalvay By The Sea, where there is an old style Inn that I believe was used for filming of the Anne of Green Gables TV show and they apparently make the best Sticky Toffee Pudding around. While in Brackley, a stop in at The Dunes is always worthwhile... A fantastic place to find both local and ecclectic art. If you continue west along Portage Rd/Hwy 6 from Brackley, there's an awesome soap store with goats :).

Basin Head is a great family friendly beach with a big pirate ship for the little ones to play on and a bridge to jump off of at high tide for the bigger ones. It is close to a great camp ground called Red Point Provincial Park and also to the East Point lighthouse. The town of Souris is in that direction and it is the site for the yearly Rollo Bay Fiddle Festival in mid to late July.

If you're looking to see a true red sand beach, Argyle Shore Provincial Park is beautiful but you have to go at low tide to really experience it, as then you can often find sea glass on the beach and crabs, jellyfish, moonsnails and maybe even starfish in the tidepools. There is an app called Tides Near Me that shows the daily tides and for reference, the closest tide location to Argyle Shore would be Victoria, which is also the name of a lovely little town just 10 minutes from Argyle Shore with an incredible chocolate store and a few fantastic pottery and gift stores.

JR's makes a mean donair pizza. If you don't know what donair is, you have to try it. Be specific though, ask for a donair PIZZA, otherwise you'll end up with a donair wrap, which is also delicious but not quite as good as the pizza version (in our family's humble opinion).

You'll need an advanced booking for this one (and preferably a babysitter if you have kids, though we've brought our boys before). Chef Michael Smith's legendary Fireworks Feast lives here and it's worth it if you can make it. It's 90 minutes from Charlottetown and an incredible experience, but books up early. Worth a try even on a last minute basis... You never know when there will be a cancellation. Or you could book for next year when you plan to come back to visit us again :).

I have no words for this place. Just go here. Or to any of it's locations (downtown Ch'Town, Peakes Quay, Cavendish, Borden-Carlton, Milky Way). Eat as many ice cream cones as you possibly can while you are here. Ice cream will be never be the same again. The cones are home made and we have yet to try a flavour we don't love. And their cheese is great. Enough said. We love COWS.

Sweet little fishing town. The Blue Mussel Cafe sits right in the lovely little harbour and is well known for its fantastic fresh seafood. Deep sea fishing with Captain Joey in North Rustico is a yearly highlight for us. On the way back to Ch'Town from Rustico you'll find a farmhouse where they make hands down the most incredible wood fired pizzas and gouda cheese ever. Full stop. Father and son Malcolm and Micheal Stanley make gorgeous pottery and Bittersweet Rose of Victoria has really sweet local art and giftware.
