Interesting places to visit

Scattered around Styra in the south of Evia are some 25 megalithic structures, all perched on hills and mountains. Made with huge slabs of grey limestone, these pyramid-like buildings have drystone walls, bound purely by weight and without any sort of mortar. They also blend with their rocky backdrops, and often hardly look man-made until you see the rectangular doorways framed by massive slabs in their lintels and jambs. The best and most researched example is on Mount Oche at almost 1,400 metres, where the lintel is four metres long and two metres wide, weighing a mind-boggling 10 tons. Ceramics found at this building go back as far as the 8th century BC during the Archaic Period, which hints at the great age of the Dragon Houses. After sizing up the Dragon House on Mount Oche you can embark on the hike of a lifetime on an old shepherd’s path through this gorge. Walking the Dimosari Gorge takes around half a day and the path through a forest with oaks, holly, chestnut trees plane trees and wild olive and pear trees. Half-way along the gorge is the bucolic village of Lenoseoi , while the terrain varies from a gentle valley to a rocky ravine with waterfalls and rapids. Go quietly and you may have some animal encounters as the forest is a habitat for rich birdlife including buzzards, eagles, owls and nightingales. At journey’s end is Kaliani Beach where you can cool off with a dip in the Aegean. When the winds (meltemia) are strong to our beaches ( in front to Seagulls) you can always drive 2 min ( 1 km) to Klimaki or on foot, where the sea is always calm. It is a semi-organised beach, more crowed, with visitors from all over Evia. Use this link from Seagulls: https://goo.gl/maps/J6ncxd16mQPzmaMt9

Beaches that deserve to drive there and swim!

If you like your beaches to be wild and open to the elements, Chiliadou is the one for you. The journey there isn’t easy as it takes more than an hour from Halkida, but for the last third the serpentine road weaves through a sublime mountainous landscape, past the 1,742-metre Dirfi peak. Finally you’ll be at three beaches in an otherwise fearsome environment of gnarled limestone cliffs. The largest of these beaches is Chiliadou, formerly just for naturists as it’s so remote, but now visited by all. The beach is broad sweep of sand and pebbles, sometimes lashed by waves, but with transparent water on calmer days. Parents with children need to take care as the shore drops off suddenly. Small white pebbles and dazzling emerald waters can be found at another one of Evia’s top beaches. Zarakes Beach lies roughly 3 kilometres outside the village of the same name. Its crystalline waters deepen quickly and the strong winds and large waves that are usually found within the area make it less than ideal for small children. A few tavernas can be found behind the beach, though aside from that, it’s unorganized. Use this link from Seagulls: https://goo.gl/maps/Nqhrgg9xiCodqJSj8

Well-known for its rare geological characteristics and plant species, the gorge of Agios Dimitrios is the perfect opportunity for those new to canyoning. A newly-built road runs through the gorge, though a footpath within its slopes takes walkers through the picturesque village of Agios Dimitrios, passing strange layers of cippolina marble and other geological oddities until reaching the pristine beach of Schinodavlia along southern Evia’s northern coast. Kalamos beach is a beautiful coast that is bathed by the Aegean Sea and charms with its turquoise waters, golden sand and impressive rock formations that compose an exotic landscape. The view from above will enchant you, a balcony over the Aegean! In fact, these are two small consecutive beaches separated by a rock. The first beach, the north, has been named "Good" because usually its turquoise waters are calmer, while the second, the south, which is just a few meters from the first is called "Bad" because its waters are wilder. . Its waters deepen relatively steeply and there is thick white sand inside and outside the sea, while in some places you will find pebbles. On the north beach, which is more organized than the south, you will find a beach bar, showers along the beach, beach volleyball court, as you will be able to do scuba diving, canoe - kayak and rent pedal boats. The beach is free for your own equipment, you will not find umbrellas and sunbeds. The second beach is preferred mainly by the friends of free camping where they set up their tents. Of course we must remind you that it is forbidden! Above the beach, in the settlement you will find rooms for rent to spend the night and taverns to enjoy delicious snacks. From Seagulls there are to ways to reach Kalamos: - From the main road as seen from the map - The seaside road ( a bit off road) driving From Agioi Apostoloi to Stomio beach, Cheromilos, Mageiras and finally Kalamos. City/town information

An irresistible combination of mountain, sea and cosmopolitan character render Karystos a perfect place to welcome the summer. This picturesque town, on the southern coast of Evia, is endowed with nature and history and a coastline that alternates between calm sandy shores and wild rocky bays. Karystos is indebted to the Bavarian engineer Mirbach, under commission from King Otto, for its impressive town planning. With neoclassical buildings, beautiful squares and wide streets, it lends itself to early evening strolls. Before that, dedicate an afternoon to seeing Bourgi, the 13th-century Venetian tower. Also, the extensive Giokaleio Foundation Library is well worth a visit, not least because it is home to the Archaeological Museum of Karystos, with exhibits ranging from prehistoric to Roman times.
