He decided on an 80-acre fruit orchard accompanied by a four-acre vineyard of Alicante Bouschet grapes. The orchard was slowly replanted over the next 20 years and Volkhardt Family Vineyards was created. The land stayed in the family for three generations spanning over 50 years when G V Cellars took over.

In 1921 ... when the Power Family set up a modest fruit stand along I-80 in Vacaville, who would have imagined they were starting a business that would become a driving force in retail for most of the 20th century. But so it was. The Nut Tree simply took off. In no time it was the state's first major road stop, drawing Californians in droves with its eclectic mix of western California cuisine (which some say it originated), packaged dried fruits, miniature railroad, fly-in airport, and retail offerings. It set retail trends across the nation and became an icon as it hosted events for everyone from stars and sports celebrities to dignitaries and even royalty. And its success was no accident. Beyond the Powers' uncanny business sense, the Nut Tree had something very special going for it: the perfect location. Conveniently located along the heavily traveled corridor of Interstate 80 between San Francisco and Sacramento, the Nut Tree was literally right off the highway (according to Helen Power, "you still left two wheels on the road when you pulled up"). You simply couldn't miss it. If you were one of the millions of drivers passing by, you didn't. Now the Nut Tree is back, and once again, it's making history with a bold new look, a unique mix of your favorite retail stores, restaurants and services, as well as the beloved and newly renovated Nut Tree Plaza, designed especially for kids. Today, just as many years ago, a visit to the Nut Tree is sure to be an enjoyable and memorable experience for the whole family!

Farm Stands

GET SOME DELICIOUS LOCALLY SOURCED PRODUCE. The anticipation begins with the first signs of spring, as the weather starts to warm, blooms fill the trees and the mustard seed cover crop is ploughed away from the valley floor for yet another year. Before long, little green crops emerge from below the soil. Tomatoes, carrots, broccoli, strawberries, melons, potatoes – the list goes on and on. And as the cool spring air transitions towards summer, locals know it’s just about time for Suisun Valley’s farm stands to open. The Suisun Valley farm stands, most open seasonally in the summer and fall months, are family-owned and locally loved.
Larry's Produce is a popular roadside produce stand in Suisun Valley open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June to December every year. Larry Balestra, a fourth generation farmer, and his wife Lisa, opened the produce stand in the summer of 1986 at their current location on Suisun Valley Road near Fairfield. With only themselves and a single employee, the trio farmed about 40 acres to start. After years of hard work and developing innovative business techniques, they now farm over 1,200 acres that include various fruits and vegetables sold at the stand, as well as wheat, safflower, garbanzo beans and canario beans. The small fruit stand has also grown substantially and has turned into a busy hub for both local shoppers and businesses as well as visitors from adjacent cities and counties. The Balestras employ approximately 80 people during the peak season. In addition to selling the large variety of fruits and vegetables they grow on their land, they also augment their selection by purchasing products from the San Francisco terminal market. These are generally fruits and vegetables that they are unable to grow themselves due to climate and soil restrictions. By further serving their customers in this way, Larry's has become a one-stop shopping stand for fresh produce and one of the largest in Solano County.
