Parks & Nature

Hikers can climb a host of winding paths up the hill. The tree canopy that covers most of the expanse provides respite from the blazing sun and evokes a feeling of serenity that one might not experience in a less sheltered setting. The shade also creates anticipation of the bright, wide-open at and near the summit, which sits 136 metres above sea level and is the highest point in North Saanich. You will get a 270-degree panorama that has wonderful views of the Saanich Peninsula, the Gulf Islands and the San Juan Islands. Birdwatchers will also appreciate the wood-peckers, hummingbirds, and migrating songbirds that pass through the area. Plan for about a 40 minute round trip.

Thousands of tropical butterflies (up to 70 species) fly through the large facility. With surprises at every turn, you will encounter poison dart frogs, tortoises, large iguanas, flamingos, tropical dicks, free flying tropical birds and more. Stroll thought the lush gardens that include tropical flowers, carnivorous plants and fruits of the world. Our kids love the newest exhibit, the Insectarium, where they can experience an array of impressive insects and invertebrates from around the world. One of my son’s favourite’s is the largest stick bug in the world.
