Sightseeing

These are some of our favorite places and the ones we recommend visiting.
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a pristine stretch of coast on the shore of Lake Superior featuring large geologic 50-200 ft. sandstone cliffs that extend for more than 15 miles along the shoreline. There is also beautiful scenery, hiking trails and a beach covered with agates nearby. Make sure and take mosquito repellent.

This is a must-see place if you are in our area during the winter. Because they are ice caves, you will want to visit when snow and ice are present, which is typically from Nov.-April. Be sure to dress warm and wear something on your feet with good traction. The hike to the caves is part of the adventure and is about a mile. There are port-a-potties in the parking lot. The small village of Chatham is nearby and there are a couple of bars, restaurants and places that rent the ice cleats (check beforehand, as hours may be limited) . The New Moon Bar in Chatham rented them for $5 a pair the last time we checked. We love bringing along a thermos full of hot drinks for the trek and don't forget your camera. If you get some great shots, be sure and share them to our Social Media pages!

Marquette Mountain Ski and Bike Recreation area is great for people of all ages, from children on up. Not Whistler, by any means, but great for people who like to ski. Summer biking is terrific! They have a small bar and restaurant inside the Lodge called the T-Bar. Lift tickets are reasonably priced. Check out their website for more details. https://www.marquettemountain.com/

There are several fishing charters that leave from Shelter Bay, which is approximately 8 miles to the east. Kimar's and Shelter Bay Charters are two that we like.

Don't miss

The Northern Lights

Who says you have to travel to Alaska, Iceland or Finland to see the Aurora Borealis? We are in a prime spot for viewing them. On a clear night you have a good chance of being able to see the Northern Lights (when in season) nebulae, planets, moons, and twinkling stars. The best months for the Northern Lights are between August and April, with the peak months being April, October and November. Clear nights without snow in the forecast are optimal.
