Shipping magnate Captain William Nickels built the house in 1807 as his trophy house. After his death the house was used as a hotel until Alvin Sortwell purchased it in 1899 as a summer home for his family. Over the years they lovingly restored the home and furnished it in the Colonial Revival style. It is open for tours June 1st-Oct 15th, Friday-Sunday.

The Water Street Grill has replaced Le Garage which everyone missed. The new restaurant is right on the banks of the Sheepsoct River with lovely water views from the deck dining area. There is also a cozy bar area with its own menu.
