Picasso Museum in Malaga The people of Malaga are proud of the fact that Picasso was born here and it was a big day when the King and Queen of Spain inaugurated the Museo Picasso (Picasso Museum) on the 27th October 2003. On that first day alone almost 2,000 people visited. the museum, which is housed in the Palacio de Buenavista. You will find it right in the heart of the Historic Centre of the city, with the dramatic backdrop of the Alcazaba Fortress and Gibralfaro Castle close by. Literally two minutes walking distance from Malaga Cathedral, this magnificent old building has been painstakingly restored to befit the importance of the works of the great artist. If you are looking for the Museum for the first time, remember that just a couple of minutes away, in the Plaza de la Merced, is the Casa Natal (Birthplace of Picasso), which has been open to the public since 1988. There are now exhibition rooms in the Casa Natal, as well as pictures and a view of how life was for the artist in his early years in Malaga. Some people find the Casa Natal first and mistakenly think that this is the Picasso Museum and then go no further. Since the two buildings are only a few minutes distance apart, visiting them both in one day is both feasible and indeed recommended. https://www.museopicassomalaga.org/en/

Las Cuevas de Nerja (the Caves of Nerja) are a series of naturally formed caves and caverns in the hills of Maro, 4km North-East of Nerja, some of which have taken up to two million years to form. The caves contain the widest naturally-formed column in the world, at 32m high and 13x7m at its base. Formed by the merging of a stalagmite and stalactite, it has held the Guinness World Record since 1989. The caves also famously host the annual Nerja International Festival of Music and Dance. A visit to these caves is a truly unique experience. In 2010 the caves were the most visited attraction in Málaga province. The site is steeped in both geological and archaeological interest; cave paintings depict images of goats, horses, deer, seals and birds, drawn using red and black pigments. The images have been dated between at 25,000 and 3,600 B.C. The Nerja caves were used by many different tribes including: hunters, fishermen and harvesters, from the Neolithic to Paleolithic period, and the Bronze Age. For this reason, these caves are one of the major references for the study of prehistory in the southern Iberian Peninsula. The discovery of Las Cuevas de Nerja revolutionized Nerja, converting this agricultural and fishing town into one of the most popular tourist destinations in Andalucía. https://www.cuevadenerja.es/en/

La Alcazaba is Malaga's most important landmark, and overlooks the city from a hilltop inland. It is one of two Moorish fortresses in the city, the other being the Castillo de Gibralfaro, situated above. The Alcazaba is the best-preserved Moorish fortress palace in Spain. Constructed on the ruins of a Roman fortification during the reign of Abd-al-Rahman I, the first Emir of Cordoba, in around 756-780AD, the Alcazaba's original purpose was as a defence against pirates, thanks its commanding position with views over the city, down to the sea and across to Africa. The fortress was rebuilt by the Sultan of Granada, Badis Al-Ziri, from 1057-1063AD, while the fortified double walls that connect the Alcazaba to the neighbouring Castillo de Gibralfaro, over the Coracha ridge, were built by the Nasrid ruler Yusuf I in the 14th century, when most of the inner palace was also refurbished. As a palace, it was home to a number of Moorish rulers. The Alcazaba has a distinct feel from its more famous, younger neighbours, the Alcazar of Sevilla and the Alhambra of Granada. It was already three centuries old when the others were build. After the reconquest, it fell into decay until restoration work began in 1933, and continues slowly today. Two of its original three walls remain, as well as over 100 towers and three palaces. https://www.andalucia.org/en/malaga-cultural-tourism-alcazaba-de-malaga

Cabopino Beach, the easternmost of Marbella, is partly nudist: in fact, it is the only naturist beach in the municipality. It is divided into two areas: the one closest to the marina is not nudist, and here you will find beach bars, sun loungers, showers and all the facilities of a normal and ordinary urban beach, while the western area of the beach, towards Elviria, is dedicated to naturism. There are no infrastructures here, and the area is surrounded by the dunes and pine trees of the Artola protected natural area.

This beach is located in the center of Marbella , in the area known as La Fontanilla . It has a length of approximately 730 meters. The occupancy of this space is quite high since, being so central, it receives many visits from tourists and citizens. The type of sand is dark with some gravel. It is on the seafront of Marbella so it has many restaurants, beach bars and bars , as well as souvenir shops and many other services. After your day at the beach you can enjoy a walk along the promenade, sit on a terrace to eat or have something cool. You can also visit El Parque de la Constitución which is a few meters away.

One of the jewels of the Costa del Sol is the beautiful little village of Mijas, which nestles comfortably in the mountainside at 400 meters above sea level about 10km from the coast. Of the ten thousand population, there are so many foreign and English speaking residents in and around the village that the Town Hall has a very helpful Foreigner's Department, which caters for the needs of those residents who do not speak Spanish. When you wander through the narrow cobbled streets of this Andalucian village, you can understand what has attracted foreigners over the years. Many artists and writers have made it their home, enjoying the benefits of an excellent all year round climate, without being part of the busier, more commercial coastal towns just 7 kilometres down the mountain side. Despite its huge popularity with tourists, Mijas Pueblo has somehow managed to retain much of its traditional Andalucian way of life, the locals displaying their unabashed passion for all things festive and an unmistakable relaxed outlook. The craft shops have some wonderful hand made pottery and often affordable paintings and prints by acclaimed local artists. A carefully chosen holiday memento could turn out to be a sound investment.

Cable Car The Benalmadena Cable Car was opened in 2003 and became one of the main tourist attractions on the Costa del Sol. The modern Telecabina (or Teleférico) is part of the Selwo Adventure Parks group, which also has Selwo Aventura in Estepona and Selwo Marina in Benalmádena port. The Telecabina takes you on an amazing 15-minute journey in a four-person cable car right up to the highest point on the Málaga coast at an altitude of almost 800m above sea level. From this superb vantage point, you not only have the most magnificent views of the Costa del Sol, but also the awesome panoramic vistas of the Sierra Nevada mountains (white with snow in the winter months), the Guadalhorce Valley and on a clear day you can see Gibraltar and the coast of Africa. The first time I took a trip in the Telecabina, I couldn't understand why they asked if I wanted a single or return ticket! I thought they were joking. Was I never coming back down again? I soon realized that many people opt to walk down on the special footpath and others even take mountain bikes in the cabin and cycle down. A significant number of annual season tickets are sold to keen cyclists who use the Telecabina for the thrill of cycling back down the mountain. If you take your bike, you have the cabin exclusively for just you and your bike for the price of a one-way ticket. Once at the top, there are clearly marked signs leading to specific viewpoints: Cima Calamorro (the Calamorro Mountain Peak) and Sur (south) and Oeste (west). At the summit, you can take a donkey ride through the beautiful natural surroundings. The donkeys are ready and waiting for cable car passengers. As well as a donkey ride, included in the price you can also see an exhibition of fine Spanish dressage horses. You can also see a demonstration on how the birds of prey live alongside humans and watch the speed and feeding habits of a peregrine falcon or the majestic flight of the eagle. So successful is the bird of prey sanctuary on the Calamorro Mountaintop that four rare Royal Owl chicks were successfully bred there recently, news that hit the local papers. There are more than sixty birds of different species, including vultures, royal eagles, peregrine falcons and white-headed vultures as well as the Royal Owls. All of this makes the cable car ride exciting, educational and enjoyable for the whole family. To find the Telecabina, go into Arroyo de la Miel village and follow the signs for Tivoli World. Right opposite the entrance to Tivoli is the entry to the cable car. https://www.telefericobenalmadena.com/?lang=en

Beach Clubs

Whilst Marbella is an all year round destination, certain businesses, Beach Clubs, in particular, will only open during the summer months. This doesn't mean that if you come here in November or March you won't be able to enjoy a fabulous meal on the sand and sip on chilled Rosé in the sunshine but the more party orientated Beach Clubs will not be open. I have prepared this handy list so you are clear what is NOT open from October through to May. Some other beach venues may just close for a few weeks in December and January but will otherwise remain open throughout the year whatever the weather!

Awesome events on the beach with authentic organic foods. With a capacity for 250 guests, in summer it deploys 200 hammocks facing the sea. The cuisine that can be enjoyed both on the terrace and inside the restaurant perfectly combines with a very elaborate wine list.

Of all the pools in Marbella, there is only one that can lift its guests to heaven itself. It is at La Cabane, and here you can find the true meaning of the word extraordinary. Designer sunbeds, Balinese beds, shows, DJ's and decoration by the prestigious Dolce & Gabbana brand are just some of the elements that make this pool a place that would make Fellini himself fall in love with.
