Customs and culture

Learn a little bit of the lingo

Newfoundland is known for its interesting take on many words and phrases. Try using some of the more common phrases during your interactions. "Where you longs to?" means "Where are you from?" "Whatta yat?" is simply asking what you are doing. In Newfoundland, the only right answer is "This is it". "B'y" is frequently used in Newfoundland, and its exact meaning depends on the context that it is being used. Basically, it's referring to any general person, regardless of gender. "Long may your big jib draw" may be heard as you are leaving Newfoundland, wishing you a safe journey.
Ways to save

For budget-friendly meals, try the self-catering kitchen

Twillingate has three grocery stores: Foodland, Independent Grocers, and Stuckless Fresh Mart. Although Twillingate has some fantastic restaurants, make yourself at home by cooking up a meal in our well-equipped accommodations. Alcohol is available for purchase at the Tickle Point Mercantile, located across the street from the Artisan Market.
Book before you go

Iceberg Finder

Many people travel to Newfoundland every year with the hope of taking a boat tour or hiking the countless trails to spot icebergs and whales. Check the app "Iceberg Finder" to see real time updates on iceberg sightings and locations. Book your boat tour accordingly.
What to pack

Dress in layers

Even during the summer months, Newfoundland is known for its unpredictable weather. While it may be hot and humid one day, the next day may be cool and rainy. Dress in layers and bring a light jacket during the summer to be sure that you experience the most of Newfoundland, even when the weather may not be cooperating.
Travelling with kids

Nature's Playground

Twillingate is a perfect getaway for people of all ages. While there may not be much in the way of playgrounds or child-centred business, children are free to explore the rugged beauty of nature's playground. Be sure to watch your young ones when out and about, as many of our natural sights do not have safety rails or barriers. On rainy days, try our a family-friendly Knot Tying workshop, hosted by Nature's Threads NL. Conducted in a traditional style fishing stage on Twillingate harbour, take home a souvenir keychain after learning a few nautical knots.
