Food Scene

Its a vegetarian/vegan cafe with really good coffee + food and a very local vibe! It's sister cafe (Ginger Brown - just over the road) is also great!

If you love pastries - do not go past this experience. The pastries are second to none! I dream about the morning bun that Jay makes @ Pigeonhole. Drip filter coffee only - but take a seat in the window and watch the world go by. Excellent filled baguettes for lunch and bread for general sale. Only half a block from the museum and art gallery (TMAG), so a great option for a pastry/coffee beforehand/lunch afterwards... or both!

Now.. I used to have a cafe and while this may not look like the 'trendiest' establishment on the outside, Sue and Jono and their staff make (consistently) the most delicious coffee and have won many awards for their skill. Highly trained barista's.. don't miss it! Also - very close to TMAG if you're planning a trip to the museum... a great pre-visit option, its only a block away.

Essentials

I'm in the Salad Bowl (about) every day and on first name terms with most of the staff - I rarely head to one of the major supermarkets.. The range of local produce is always of the highest quality and they have excellent pre-prepared meals if you want to take something for a picnic or eat in for a night. They stock all main grocery lines, a wide range of dairy, an international cheese and smallgoods fridge and wonderful fresh fruit, vegetables and breads. Fantastic options for all dietary requirements - plus the pre-prepared meals. A definite recommendation!

Arts & Culture

A rich collection of Tasmania's unique history - flora/fauna, antarctic connections and convict past. Many other installations, including a good children's exploration area. There is an in-house cafe of reasonable quality.

Shopping

A trip to Hobart wouldn't be complete without it! Fantastic shopping (all unique and small artisan shops), restaurants, exhibition spaces and Tasmanian gallery spaces. The iconic Salamanca market is also on Saturday mornings from 8am - 2pm.
