One of the first places that comes to mind is DT’s Blue Ridge Java on lower street. It is a great little cafe that offers a variety of soups, sandwiches, coffee and ice cream . My favorite sandwich is Trisha’s Bounty. Named after its inventor, Trisha. She and her husband David are the owners. They are well respected business owners in our community that have worked hard to build a very successful business. It’s a favorite for many locals. DT’s offers dine-in and carry-out. I always enjoy grabbing a milkshake or cup of coffee and walking to the park. From downtown you can take a stroll over a historic footbridge that crosses over the railroad tracks and the Toe River, connecting to great little park next to the river.

Fox and the Fig is a special little place. Their specialty is handcrafted coffee. The person making your coffee has been trained and certified in creating a perfect cup of java. What makes this little place unique is the lifestyle and philosophy of the owners. Aaron and Grace are passionate about their family and their community. It isn’t unusual to see one of Aaron and Grace’s little ones stroll in the front door in their pjs. The Buchanans have been growing a family of 7 right above the shop. If you happen to be there during a slower time of the day, you can hear the faint sound of little feet running around above. When Aaron asks his customers how they are doing, he means it. They are constantly finding ways to bring community into their shop; from the retail section of various hand crafted items to their efforts to provide a farm-to-table menu. They offer a variety of baked goods, including gluten free and vegan. I love their Saturday brunch with cathead buttermilk biscuits and gravy, but my favorite is their made from scratch (as all their food is) Everything Bagels. Be sure to ask for my favorite barista, Summer.

If you enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine, you should definitely try Los 4 Mariachis, formally Claudia’s. Claudia, the owner, has been a household name for years. She did catering from home. Catering meant stopping by her house to pick up a grocery bag full of her famous hot, foil wrapped tamales. With the help of her son, she eventually purchased her own taco truck. After a few successful years in the truck, she now has a very successful restaurant in Spruce Pine. I still see the truck around but for a nice dine-in experience, the restaurant offers all of her specials and more. I not only appreciate Claudia’s street tacos, but I also appreciate her story of success. Claudia’s story is an inspiration to women, minorities and entrepreneurs throughout the community.

Country Cafe has been around for quite a while but pretty much forgotten by me, that is until the big COVID-19 shut down. When all the restaurants were forced to offer carryout only, we decided to help out our local folks by a whole week of carryout. Not only did this give me a break from cooking, but it forced us to try new places. That’s when a Google search reminded me of Country Cafe. It is located in a strip mall, next to a long abandoned grocery store. What this little cafe offers us is an amazing hamburger and a drive thru. About twice a month me and my husband call in an order of 2 hamburgers, all the way (I mean all the way!) with fries and large teas. I hear there are many other good items on the menu, including a great country style breakfast, but the hamburgers are what brings us back time and time again. The folks there are always very friendly, complete with all the southern “honey” “dear” and “sweeties” you can expect from a small town cafe. The drive thru is a little unconventional (around the back of the abandoned grocery store) but it does the job. I’m not exactly sure what it is about the burgers, maybe the perfect bun to burger ratio, but this is our go-to for a hamburger hankering.

Every meal we have tried has been delicious! The staff is always friendly and the outdoor seating is a plus. My favorite entree is the Jerk Chicken Alfredo but don't pass up their Shrimp and Chips appetizer.
