If you're looking for something closer that has an element of mystique then picnic island is where the families go when you don't want to fight traffic. There are marshes to be explored, beaches to sprawl out on, and even a top-notch disc golf course to throw.

The Manatee Viewing Centre is a marine reserve built, among other things, to view manatees from atop a 50-foot observation deck. It also features gorgeous butterfly gardens that come alive in the spring, peaceful trails and a truly vibrant boardwalk with food, outdoor bikers and those simply taking a stroll in the sun.

They're doing amazing things there that are worth the visit. If you do go, I highly encourage doing an "animal encounter". This lets you get up close an personal with them and makes the trip into a life long memory.
