Doane's Falls is a series of five waterfalls located in Royalston, Massachusetts along an 0.2-mile (0.32 km) section of Lawrence Brook, a tributary of the Millers River that originates from Laurel Lake in Fitzwilliam. The falls are part of a 46-acre (19 ha) open space preserve acquired in 1959 by the land conservation non-profit organization The Trustees of Reservations. The 22-mile (35 km) Tully Trail passes through the property. The preserve is open to fishing, walking, picnicking, and hiking only; swimming and wading were banned in 2002 following a series of diving injuries and deaths. Canoeing and kayaking are allowed upstream from the falls along Coddings Meadow, a flatwater section of Lawrence Brook. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g41795-d2008340-Reviews-Doane_s_Falls-Royalston_Massachusetts.html

Follow a descending trail that leads to a deep, ancient gorge carved by prehistoric glacial meltwater to 45-ft falls that plunge into a basin. Over the ages, the rushing waters of Falls Brook carved a deep gorge in granite, concealed by deep forest. Today, the brook plunges 45 dramatic feet into a dark pool veiled in mist, surrounded by a resurgent landscape that’s slowly erased the clear-cutting that arrived along with the first wave of 17th-century European settlers. In summer, as you descend the trail into the ravine, the falls appear suddenly from an emerald cloak of dense forest and ferns. In winter, freezing spray creates a fantastic landscape of ice. Upstream, the swirling brook has carved large glacial potholes and a natural bridge in the bedrock. https://thetrustees.org/place/royalston-falls/

This is my favorite go to beach in New England! Its always clean and has plenty of room to spread out and relax. The waves are usually pretty incredible as well! Parking isn't too bad.. This year it was around $12 but after 3 pm parking is free. Out of all the public beaches in New England, none of the others even come close. There are rides for the kids, several area places to eat and even late when all the lifeguards leave, Windjammers makes the best drinks and Lobster nachos.

Great Selection of Craft Made Beer. People travel from surrounding states to get their stock. Visit during the week to avoid larger crowds and wait times. Beautiful outside areas and shuttle from parking if main parking area is full For the Beer and Wine enthusiast: Tree House Brewery, Yankee Spirits, more… Yankee Spirits, in Sturbridge, has long been a draw for people seeking great selection and discount prices on liquors, wines and beers. With over 7000 wines, 3500 spirits and 2600 beers to choose from, it is a destination in itself. But with the rise in popularity of craft beer, the area has increasingly become a draw for the beer enthusiast. Tree House Brewery, originally in Monson (with its initial founding in Brimfield!) just opened a state-of-the-art, expanded facility and taproom in neighboring Charlton. Four of their beers rate in the Beer Advocate’s top 10, eight in the top 20. Even closer to home, there are three (and counting) breweries just in Sturbridge. Our favorite is Rapscallion Brewery. The beer is great, but so, too, are the disc golf, live music, seasonal events and food truck.

Our property is right near on the Sturbridge line, so our haunts tend to be in Sturbridge, and it seems that every year a new restaurant is opening (and filled!). This year there were three. You can find just about anything: seafood, tapas, small plates, Chinese hot pot, Thai, traditional American, steak, Italian, barbeque, sushi. We have two favorites: BT’s Smokehouse (voted one of the top 10 barbeque joints in New England by the Boston Globe) and Sturbridge Seafood (an award winning restaurant with it’s own spin on recipes and the best shrimp and paella we have ever had). Which is not to say we don’t also enjoy dining at the historic Publick House, a gathering, lodging and dining place for travelers since 1771, or at the nearby (in Brookfield), and equally historic, Salem Cross Inn, famous for its Drover’s roast – prime rib roasted over a huge fire pit.
