Entertainment

If the weather is too hot, too wet or two cold, how about retreating to the cinema? Tisvilde Biograf is a classic small town cinema theatre which was refurbished and is today run cooperatively on voluntary effort by local enthusiasts. It has an integrated café that also serves light food dishes.

Parks & Nature

Tisvilde Hegn is the forest to the west. It was raised as a plantation during the 19th century to stop sand migration which had made the area uninhabitable, after centuries of extensive agriculture and grassing had destoyed the natural barriers. It is a protected forest owned by the state.

Holløse Bredning is a wet area which has earlier been an arm of the Isefjord from the west. It is a protected bird reserve with many species of birds and you may see the sea eagle. Interestingly, since the area has been sometimes above and sometimes below sea level during the last 5,000 years, people have raised different means of crossing, reflecting the elevation of the path and their different technologies. The roads and bridges area is off limits and only partially excavated. You can see e.g. remains of a stone age wooden bridge structure or an iron age paved road.

Culture & Heritage

A rennaisance castle raised 1600-20 as a prestige project for Christian IV, a Danish king famous for failing as a king but succeeding as a builder of great buildings. Well, hooray for him, this castle with surrounding baroque garden (established around 1720) are absolutely stunning and certainly worth a visit. The site museum will sometimes run themed exhibitions with activities for children & family.

A viking age museum centered around some of the largest excavations of ships found in Denmark. The museum exhibits archeological findings but also conveys an interpretation of what life was like here during the early middle ages. There are reconstructed workshops and boats that will take visitors for short trips on the Roskilde Fjord.

A rennaisance castle overlooking the narrowest part of Øresund, the strait between Denmark and Sweden. The Øresund Toll, which for several centuries played an important part in financing the building projects and warmongering of Danish kings, was implemented from here. The castle has, since 2000, been on the UNESCO World Heritage list and is an impressive site to visit.

Every year, the town of Hundested approx. 30km from the house is host to an international sand art exhibition. We have been going every year since 2019 and it seems the quality of the works has kept going up and up. The exhibition also has some hands-on activities for playful would-be sand artists.
