Food scene

This Hidden Gem will be one of the great surprises of your Dunsmuir stay!!! Cafe Maddalena serves the best fare for hundreds of miles in any direction! They do follow all CoronaVirus re-opening guidelines: greeting people outside, socially distant seating inside and outside, all employees wearing masks, a dedicated person to clean and they have installed plexiglass near the entrance to protect tables by the door inside. The service is impeccable. The servers are friendly, and attentive. You cans tart your evening with a small but Quality-focused wine list. The food is Franco-Italian in cuisine, and seriously amazing! Wonderful, fresh, delicate artisan salads are always perfectly dressed and the flavors are on point. Enjoy unique gourmet appetizers such as corn beignets with a lime aioli dipping sauce, or deep-fried squash blossoms filled with shrimp, and more. There are chicken, beef, pork and seafood offerings for entrees (all wonderful!). You can finish your meal with a choice of luscious hand-made desserts, or an aperitif like a tawny port or sip of grappé. Pricing is moderate for the excellent quality of the fare. A definite Dunsmuir "bucket list" stop for sure. I would make reservations too. Enjoy! (And, P.S. - in the warmer months be sure to ask for outside seating at least once - the old grapevine-covered arbor is a lovely spot.) Be sure to tell them Laura sent you from the Butterfly Ranch Airbnb!)

Rather than taking it from me, read this review left for Yaks on the 5 by a recent visitor to our airbnb: "I was in Dunsmuir (at the river oak Retreat Airbnb) for a mini vacation and after planning several hikes, I figured that this would be a great stop to close out my evening. I had just made finished a hike at Lassen Volcanic Park and made a quick visit to Burney Falls before deciding that the detour back to the hotel would best be done by driving by Yak's on the 5. I questioned my decision as it was slightly out of the way just for a burger but to my joyful delight, the goods were good. I had ordered the Arnold burger, the cilantro bomb, garlic parmesan fries, and ordered a sticky bun. The covid situation here was to follow the one-way line to place an order. The paper menus were available by the door and they had a spot for you to place the "used" menus next to the cashier/counter. I think I saw 2-3 people dining indoors and most others "dining in" were sitting in the outdoor patio in the back. They are unique here as they have you draw a name from a bucket and that your number. The couple drew George Clooney and I managed to grab Lebron James. After waiting probably 10 minutes, "sexiest man alive, George Clooney, your order is ready, sexiest man alive, your order is ready". When it was my turn, "NBA Finals MVP, Lebron James, your order is ready". All food items were good enough that I would be happy to order again even though I would like to try out the rest of the menu. We mentioned this place to a friend who would be passing by this area from a drive to Portland and the bay area and they made sure to stop by." What more can we say? Michelin 5-star, Guy Fieri props, multiple award-winning burger joint you won't soon forget! And tell them Laura sent you, from the river Oak Airbnb!

A friendly and lively spot for breakfast, lunch, or just a good cup of coffee or beer in the adorable town of Dunsmuir. Pre-COVID, there were a bunch of board and dice games available to play, and trivia night on Fridays. Until those days return, it is a great spot to sit on the patio and watch the trains roll into the Dunsmuir station! And, tell them Laura sent you, from the river Oak Airbnb!

Hedge Creek Falls is a waterfall on Hedge Creek, in the Shasta Cascade area in Dunsmuir, California. There is a small cave located behind the waterfall, allowing visitors to walk behind the cascading water. Down the trail about a mile from the waterfall, Hedge Creek flows into the Sacramento River south of Mossbrae Falls. At the bottom of the trail, there is a viewing platform over the river, with a view of Mount Shasta. But you don't need to go completely down the trail - access to the waterfall and viewing platform is via a short hiking trail. The trail starts at a small park off the Dunsmuir Ave/Siskiyou Ave exit on Interstate 5. The waterfall is 0.2 miles (0.32 km) down Hedge Creek Falls Trail. The close proximity to Interstate 5, makes the waterfall a very popular stopping point for passing motorists. Any hiker can enjoy this extremely beautiful, short, trail. Walking behind the waterfall with the clear view of the small creek cascading down the canyon will make this quite enjoyable. NOTE: I recommend at least tennis shoes (sandals not recommended) as trail is wet and some areas are mildly slippery.

Mossbrae Falls is one of the most scenic waterfalls in California. Approximately 50 feet (15 m) in height and 175 feet (53 m) wide, the falls are fed by springs that course down the canyon wall, and into the Sacramento River, creating the effect of many waterfall streams, two of them especially large, falling into the river. The entire course of the falls is longer than 52 feet (16 m); however the upper cascades cannot be observed through flora that covers the mountainside. The bottom 50 feet (15 m) is a straight plunge into the river. The waterfall is named for the profusion of moss on the hillside at the site, together with brae, which means "a steep bank or hillside" in Irish and Scots. To get to the falls, go to the north end of Dunsmuir Avenue, near Scarlet Way. Find a place to park (up on Dunsmuir Avenue is the best to avoid irritating the cabin owners nearby). Once you get on foot, your trip to Mossbrae Falls is about 1.2 miles. The first street you walk down is Scarlet Way, which is located in the Shasta Retreat. You'll see a sign at the top of the hill at Dunsmuir Avenue and Scarlet Way. Walk down the road. At the bottom, the road turns into Cave Avenue. Veer right at that point and keep walking. After you veer right, you'll walk for about 100 yards, at which point you will see a small bridge that leads to the railroad tracks. Once you get to the tracks, make a right and stay on the east side of the tracks (the right side), which is closest to the Sacramento River that you'll be walking along. You'll be moving north at this point. Continue walking up the tracks until you get slightly past mile marker 3/4. There you will find a bridge. Do not cross it. Instead, right before the bridge, look to your right. There will be several trails that take you into Mossbrae Falls. Additionally, there is currently a big boulder near the tracks that has the words "Mossbrae Falls" spray painted on it. There is a spray-painted arrow on the rock, pointing to the river. The hike from the tracks to the falls is about 40 yards. Once you arrive at Mossbrae Falls, you'll be welcomed by a pristine location that won't disappoint. There is also a bench there that you can sit on to soak in the view. Once you're done at the Falls, you simply backtrack and make your way back to the vehicle you rode in on.

The Castle Crags are an awesome formation of granite spires to explore. There are a few trails winding around the lower reaches of the Castle Crags, most notably the Pacific Crest Trail. The Castle Dome Trail climbs through the forest before finally topping out on a brushy saddle slung between Castle Dome and the high towers of the Crag’s eastern face. Moderate hike, fantastic scenery, a must see!

MT. BRADLEY LOOKOUT Mt. Bradley Lookout is a moderate to difficult hike with two attractive lake destinations along the way – dramatic Heart Lake and pastoral Little Castle Lake. Mount Bradley looms 3,000 feet above the town of Dunsmuir, the Mt. Bradley Ridge begins west of Castle Peak and continues east for another 4.5 miles before dropping abruptly into the Sacramento River Canyon. It is easy to see why a lookout would be placed in this location, offering what may be the most superb view in the area. Dog Friendly.

The river is made up of riffles, runs, pocket water, small holes, huge pools and undercuts, all of which provide anglers with opportunities to fish dry flies, a variety of nymphing techniques, or even streamers, all in a day’s fishing. Rainbow trout are the predominate fish in these waters, and most are healthy, wild, and native to the river system. They are full of fight, and often go straight up in the air when they feel the prick of a fly in their lip.

A popular destination for visitors to Castle Crags State Park is the scenic overlook at the end of Vista Point Trail. This easy half-mile round trip hike leads to a triptych of views. On your left, you’ll spot the Gray Rocks rising above evergreen ridges. On your right, there is a clear view of Mount Shasta. In the center, rise the Castle Crags, a fortress of daunting granite peaks. It’s a three-course meal of views, reached by a quick and effortless walk. Start from the parking area at the end of Vista Point Road, where a well marked trail sets out for Vista Point. The quarter-mile long trail takes a horseshoe-shaped course up to a landing on Kettlebelly Ridge. The trail starts out heading southeast, but swings around to face northwest toward the Castle Crags. At 0.15 miles, as the trail is making a curve to the right, you will pass the top of another trail on the left that descends toward the campground. Continue up the trail, which levels out and arrives at the scenic overlook. Reaching the overlook, you will first be struck by the head-on view of the Castle Crags. The mountains rise 3,000 feet above the overlook and are made up of jagged rugged peaks. Find a large opening in the trees to your right and it will line you up perfectly for a clear views north toward Mount Shasta. This massive volcano is over 14,000 feet tall and completely covered in snow during the winter months. In geological terms, Mount Shasta is relatively young compared to the area’s other mountains, having begun forming just 530,000 years ago. There is also a gap in the trees to the left, providing a window up a canyon carved by Castle Creek. Across the canyon there are evergree ridges topped by rocky peaks known as the Gray Rocks, which look different from the Castle Crags and are actually made up of greenstone. There are picnic tables and a viewing scope at the vista point, allowing you to really enjoy the surroundings. Vista Point Trail is wheelchair-friendly and gains 50 feet in a quarter mile, with a typical grade of 4% and a typical width of 4 feet. Dogs and bikes are not allowed on trails in Castle Crags State Park. There is an entrance fee for Castle Crags State Park ($10 as of 2015). This hike is the only dog-friendly trail in Castle Crags State Park. (Review credit - discoversiskiyou.com)

Difficulty: Hard Length: 5.5 miles (to Castle Dome), 7 miles (including Vista Point Trail and Indian Springs Spur) Elevation Gain: 2,135 feet Season: All year State Park Fee: $8, $7 senior discount The Castle Dome Trail climbs through forested area before popping you out between Castle Dome and the Crag’s eastern face. The trail is steep and starts without exceptional views, but the final third of the trail makes it all worth the trek, with a scenic ascent through granite pinnacles with amazing views of the Grey Rocks, Castle Dome and Mount Shasta. Before heading out on the main trail, it is a worthwhile warm up to walk the easy 0.25 mile path to a vista point. Though this adds 0.5 miles to the overall effort, the trail is ADA compatible and very, very easy. It is important to note that the name of this trail is a bit misleading, as it does not lead to the summit of Castle Dome. Instead, the trail ends near the base of the dome. It is possible to reach the summit, however, there is some very dangerous exposure and should not be undertaken without sound judgment and safety precautions. While on the topic of safety, it’s also important to remember that this is rattlesnake territory in warm months. Click here for information on snake species and what to do in the event of a snake bite. Want more information about Castle Crags State Park? Click here! DIRECTIONS From the Castella exit on I-5, proceed a few hundred yards west on Castle Creek Road to the entrance to the State Park. Turn right into the park entrance and pay the $8.00 at the guard station. Turn right immediately after the guard station and continue through the campground. Just beyond the campground there is a turnaround. Use the turnaround if your vehicle does not have a tight steering radius. From here it is a little over a mile up a winding, one lane road to the trailhead. The park is open from 6AM to 8PM. There is no overnight parking at the trailhead. Root Creek Falls is a large, multi-tiered waterfall that spills 500+ feet over the granite Castle Dome just south of Dunsmuir in the Castle Crags wilderness area. This impressive cataract remained “undiscovered” until only a decade or two ago, safeguarded by manzanitas, poison oak, rattlesnakes and the occasional bear. But for the intrepid hiker, the reward is a little slice of Yosemite without the crowds. The best access is via an unofficial trail off Root Creek Trail. If you access Root Creek Trail via the Castle Dome Trail, there is a fee to park. Category: Medium Distance: 6 miles Elevation Gain: 700 ft. Route Type: Out & Back Directions: Traveling on Interstate 5, take the Soda Creek exit. Go to the west side of the freeway and park at the Pacific Crest Trial trailhead. The trailhead is only yards from the southbound freeway exit. (review credit - discoversiskiyou.com)
