Don's Market is the closest place for groceries, food, and supplies. It is about a 20-minute drive from the house on the 79 towards Ramona. The town has a gas station, market, restaurant, and the famous Julian Pie Company. From Santa Ysabel, it is only a 15-minute drive to the town of Julian for more restaurants, shops, hiking and more.

Food scene

Best Mexican food in the county is at Los Jilberto's. Great food, friendly service. Highly recommend the Carne Asada Burrito. CASH ONLY but there is an ATM at the liquor store a few doors down.

A very strange but fascinating place to visit. Can sometimes have a "smell" to it but you will get accustomed to it. Picnic areas, trails, beach walks.

Bombay Beach is home to art structures like you've never seen. Drive down to the beach, get out and walk among the structures, visions, and ruins. On your way back to the highway, make sure you drive through the streets of Bombay Beach to see even more artistry.

Amazing views of the desert like you've never seen. Most cars should be able to make it back to the lookout. Tip: don't stop in soft sand.

Ocotillo Wells SVRA is a beautiful desert scene with many ways to explore. Many of the roads through the park are accessible to 2-wheel drive vehicles, although I always recommend bringing a tow rope just in case. These roads usually have points of interest like Artisan Wells and the Gas Domes. There are also roads to park and hike into points like the Wind Caves or Elephant Trees hiking trails. If you have a high clearance and/or four-wheel drive, then exploration is limitless. Again, I always recommend a tow rope, plenty of water, clothing layers and snacks. This desert is a ghost town during the summer months, so I do not recommend going out unless you have others with you and you enjoy HOT!! If you need fuel, food or anything else, Salton City is only 30 minutes away or head back to Borrego Springs. The ranger station is at the entrance to the park and is always staffed. They have great things for kids to explore and can give you places to go according to the type of vehicle you have. The also have free park maps which are a must.

Only a 20-minute drive from the house is the beautiful Anza Borrego Desert State Park (ABDSP). Entry to the park is free (the visitor center has a fee). Exploring is endless. Check out the visitor center for all the information, pictures, maps, and more. Temperatures range from 40's-60's in the winter and 90's-120's in the summer. The town is open year-round but has limited hours in the summertime. Things To Visit While There: Anza Borrego Desert Nature Center (652 Palm Canyon Dr, Borrego Springs, CA 92004) is also an informative place for the history buff or those looking for desert memorabilia. Beautiful golf courses: Rams Hill, Road Runner Golf & Country Club, De Anza Country Club, Borrego Springs Resort Galleta Meadows: Beautiful metal sculptures all over the desert floor. Just a 45-minute drive northwest to Temecula, you will go through the beautiful backcountry and will even come upon a few wineries on the way! I highly recommend La Serenissima outside of Warner Springs in a small town called Sunshine Summit. It is usually best to call for a tasting. If you go straight through to Temecula, I recommend hitting the smaller, boutique-style wineries, unless you like the busyness of the larger ones. There is an abundance of wineries so plan on the whole day!

Just a 45-minute drive west from Ranchita is a valley abundant with award-winning wineries and tasting rooms with outstanding views. More than 30 wineries are in the Ramona valley, each offering a unique blends and friendly smiles. Ramona is known for its red wines although you will find a few whites that are sure to please the palate. My personal favorites: Edwards Vineyard & Cellars: My personal favorite, every red is wonderful and a Rose' to die for. Vic & Beth own and run the vineyard...tell them Lori sent you! Milagro: Beautiful country setting surrounded by horse farms and vineyards. Kid and pet friendly. Chuparosa: Fantastic reds, beautiful setting, small and comfortable. Great for picnic lunch. Barrel 1: Wonderful white and red wines in a beautiful and elegant outdoor setting.
