Visit this magnificent feat of Victorian civil engineering. Bike hire is available if you fancy the twelve mile ride around the lake. Or drive round and stop at a number of picnic sights and enjoy the sculptures. There is a cafe near the dam or for something a bit more special; lunch at the Lake Vyrnwy Hotel with commanding views over the lake.

Mid Wales has miles of beautiful coast line but the town of Aberdyfi (Aberdovey) is a beautiful backdrop to its impressive beach. We love Aberdyfi; it has an excellent fish and chip shop, Walkes and spectacular views over the Dyfi estuary to Ynys Las. The drive out to the coast alone make this trip worth while.

This little known house and garden in Tregynon is well worth a visit. Donated to the former University of Wales by the Davies sisters. Margaret and Gwendoline were wealthy heiresses. Both unmarried, they set out to create a centre of excellence for the arts, music and crafts that would enrich the lives of the people of Mid Wales after the war. The sunken garden is impressive as is the arboretum. The house is not open to the public but there is a gift shop and tea room in the stable courtyard.

Food scene

The Royal Oak is Welshpool's only large Hotel and restaurant. It is good for morning coffee, lunch or afternoon tea. This is a nice place to eat and probably one of the best in town.

The Nags Head is about 5 miles towards Newtown but definitely worth the trip. The food is excellent and good value for money. The decor is good. The biggest asset I have found, after the food, is that the staff are friendly, welcoming and helpful.

Sports

My golfing friends and family members told me this is an excellent course and a very friendly club. Open to nonmembers a big bonus is the fantastic views it has over the surrounding countryside.
