Fueled with courage, bolstered by humor, and lifted up by an unprecedented number of volunteers who poured in from around the country, the people of the Mississippi coast began to rebuild their lives and their towns. Our museum is not a memorial to a disaster, but a tribute to the strength and beauty of the human spirit.

Our headquarters, the Kate Lobrano House, is a delightful 1896 shotgun cottage that was donated to the society in 1988 by the grandchildren of Katherine Maynard Lobrano. Most of the original house is used as a turn-of-the-century museum, but a large addition to the rear provides office and storage facilities for research, lecture and social function areas. We seat sixty people at monthly luncheon meetings.

Coffee & Food

Built in 1868 and boasting a rare three-sided gallery, the Mockingbird Café is a small, charmingly eclectic venue located two blocks from the Beachfront, Old Town Bay St. Louis. The 'bird is the preferred hangout of anyone with an easy spirit. We've been called the Living Room of the Bay, and that is true. When the Mockingbird was born, out of the destruction of Hurricane Katrina, locals and volunteers alike found the 'bird to be a welcome and comforting presence in the trying, chaotic times after the storm. So stop by and relax in Bay St. Louis' livingroom.

Neighborhoods

The historic downtown area of Bay St Louis mostly survived Katrina. There are many historical homes and buildings with small retail businesses, coffee shops and restaurants, and art galleries and antique malls, in them. It's a great place to stroll around and to explore. There is ample free parking (along now with some paid parking lots) within about a 1-4 block radius of the main business/shops/restaurants district. And street side parking is also allowed. There is an "Old Town Bay St Louis Historic Walking & Biking Tour" map available at the DEPOT Visitors Center or to download directly online from the local web based journal The Shoofly Magazine, under "maps" and "tours", as a pdf file.

Best Beach

Henderson Point is just across the bay bridge from downtown Bay St Louis, on your way to Pass Christian. You just take a right immediately after the bridge. It is the only beach that is not directly on a main road, and like other local beaches, is usually not very crowed. Park in the lot and walk west towards the bay for bird watching, sunbathing, and shell collecting.

Live Music

The historical roots of music here in MS go back decades. Live music is an integral part of the culture here (as well as in LA). Many of the locations in this guidebook - Mockingbird Cafe, 100 Men Hall, Dan B's, Triplesails, The Silver Slipper, along with other beach bars and restaurants, host live bands and musicians on a regular basis. There are also regular open mic nights, where the most amazingly talented local musicians take the spotlight. Check the Shoofly calendar online for live music events during your stay https://www.bslshoofly.com/calendar.html.
The Hall is one of the rare physical sites still standing on the Mississippi Blues Trail, and is a testament to the rich birthing of American music that unfolded during a history of racial oppression. It is one of the few significant African American landmarks in Mississippi. Live music venue - check the online schedule to see what events are happening during your stay at the 100 Men Hall website.
