Along the coast from the busy fishing harbour of Brixham is Shoalstone Beach. This isn’t just a shingle beach, but has a sea water swimming pool too, so still plenty of activities to keep everyone happy. Explore the rock pools at low tide or take a walk along the coast. Nearby is Berry Head National Nature Reserve with plenty of opportunities to spot rare and endangered species, explore Napoleonic forts and a fascinating Geopark visitors’ centre. If all that leaves you feeling exhausted, situated on the edge of the pool is a café with stunning views across the sea. Type: Shingle and rocky with large areas of level hardstanding surrounding Shoalstone swimming pool. Access: There is a disabled ramp to the promenade, but steps down from the car park to the pool and onto the beach.

A great free attraction on Paignton seafront and An English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark Key Site. The park is designed around the English Riviera’s geological history. The toddler area represents the Devonian Period when the area was south of the equator and under tropical coral seas. Toddlers will be able to ride on a trilobite and swing over a wetpour sea. This area also has a seesaw, climbing hut, trampoline and spinner bowls. The junior area has a giant climbing net symbolising a time during the Carboniferous Period - when two major continents collided and we were effectively caught in the middle of the collision. A major mountain range was formed as a result the size of the Himalayas - hence the mountain shaped net. The sand and water play area represents the Permian Period when we were just north of the equator and all of our red sandstones and breccia rocks were formed. Flash floods occurred after violent storms in the distant mountains and giant millipedes crawled around! This area has a purpose built water channel for children to pump and dam water and digging equipment and tables for sand play. Then we skip to the Quaternary period which is the teen play zone and links with Kents Cavern from a geological perspective. The Neanderthals and early humans who sheltered in the caves would have had to push themselves physically to survive and the idea here is that our young people are challenged by their environment in a similar way. This is the largest area of the park and has the zip wire, towers, play huts, a six way swing, climbing logs and stilts and climbing trees.

Another great beach within 5 minutes from the flat, Hollicombe Beach, sits between Torquay and Paignton. With its distinctive red sand backed by tall cliffs it’s a sunbather’s paradise, and there’s a slipway to the beach giving easy access for people of all abilities. Don’t forget to take a fishing net for the kids, as there are some great rock pools to poke around in at low tide. A bucket and spade are also essential, as the sand here is excellent for making castles. If you’ve forgotten any of those must-have beach accessories, you’ll find everything you need in nearby Preston. To get to the beach, you’ll need to go through Hollicombe Gardens, but why not have a look around before hitting the surf? Originally an old gas works site, today you’ll find a beautiful green landscape, interesting trees and shrubs, flowerbeds with plenty of grass to relax on.

Dating back to 1936 The Drum's claim to fame is its architect; the world famous Sir Edwin Lutyens (www.lutyenstrust.org.uk). Lutyens designed the pub as the focal point of the village and today his beautiful vision retains all its traditional charm thanks to a recent million pound restoration project that replaced its thatched roof, restored its beautiful gardens and made the most of its superb views. A country pub near you oozing rural charm and rustic character, our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar. Soak up the sun in our pub beer garden, with plenty of seating, shaded tables and outdoor dining available. Whether you are planning dinner with friends or Sunday lunch with family, book a table online and enjoy some quality time with those you love the most. Arriving by car? You’ll find ample car parking space right outside our Torquay pub and restaurant.

This friendly multiple-award-winning cafe is located in Berry Head Nature Reserve, inside a Napoelonic-era fortress. Whether your passion is history, wildlife, walking or relaxing with family and friends in a beautiful place, Berry Head has something for you - even before trying their fabulous food! The team at the Guardhouse are passionate about offering excellent locally sourced food and drink in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with amazing panoramic coastal & sea views. Food is served from 9am until 4pm, ranging from traditional café breakfasts and lunches to unusual home-made specials. All the food is freshly made from top quality, locally-sourced ingredients. They serve delicious and beautiful coffees and Teapigs teas, along with fresh scones and mouthwatering cakes. The restaurant is also licensed and serves local beers and ciders. The Guardhouse has won multiple awards in recent years, including the Gold award for “best café / tearoom” at both the 2017 Devon and South Devon Tourism Awards, and a Silver award for “best café in the South West of England” at the 2018 South West Tourism Awards. Popular dishes, apart from the exceptional coffees and cakes, and of course a Devon Cream Tea (with cream on first!), include: - The Guardian breakfast - Huge delicious sandwiches full of quality ingredients - Homemade Brixham fish goujons with chips and homemade tartare sauce - Seasonal specials, all homemade and unusual, made from local ingredients. Popular examples are the Brixham seafood chowder, crab linguini, wild mushrooms and poached eggs on sourdough toast. The specials change regularly so call up to see what is available today! Well-behaved dogs, muddy walking boots and happy children are all very welcome inside the cafe. In the warmer months, ice creams are on sale from the cafe's retro bicycle. On the busiest days of the year they also have a barbecue outside. Throughout the year, at times which don't disturb the local rare bat colony, the cafe turns into a restaurant during the evening; advance booking is recommended for these events which can be seen on their website www.guardhousecafe.com/events/. The cafe also organises family events occasionally throughout the year, such as the Berry Head Easter Egg Hunt. Berry Head is a stunning location with views across Torbay and the South Devon coastline, rare and abundant wlidlife (including a colony of guillemots, Greater Horseshoe bats, resident porpoise and regular sightings of pods of dolphins), and a fascinating history. The prominent forts date from Napoleonic times and were part of the sea defences of Southern England. The lighthouse at the end of the headland is both the UKs shortest and highest! There are excellent walking opportunities, from a 1-hour stroll around the nature reserve to a longer walk along the south-west coast path. The Guardhouse is one of many English Riviera businesses with a keen focus on local suppliers. Beer is supplied from Bay's in Paignton; coffee from a roastery in Torquay; milk and cheeses from the Dartmouth Dairy company, cakes and brownies from two ladies living in Brixham and Paignton. The cafe's regular menu and their specials board uses local produce as much as possible: Brixham fish via Stefan the fishmonger, fruit and vegetables from Fairalls on Brixham's fore street, bread and scones from Halletts the bakers in Paignton, as well as local cider, ice cream, ham and sausages. You will notice this is a common theme in this area with most businesses using wonderful local produce. The Guardhouse is an advocate for environmentally-resonsible and sustainable business. Based in one of the most beautiful spots in South Devon they have a passion to keep the environment as pristine as possible. The cafe uses a variety of methods to minimise plastic waste and single-use packaging. All their disposable packaging is biodegradable and they encourage customers to bring their own takeaway cups, rather than using a fresh one; every takeaway cup incurs a 25p charge which the cafe gives to environmental charities

Fine dining at its very best! The multi award-winning Elephant is a Michelin star restaurant, overlooking beautiful Torquay harbour. Award winning chef Simon Hulstone runs the restaurant with his wife Katy and his talented team of chefs and friendly front of house staff. Simon has won multiple awards for his creative cuisine, and has represented Great Britain in prestigious competitions around the world. At the Elephant, they offer a changing menu based around local and sustainable ingredients, using the abundance of fantastic produce available in South Devon. They have a dedicated farm, based in Brixham which provides the team with delicious seasonal produce and free range chicken, lamb, pork and Kelly Bronze turkeys. The Elephant restaurant is a bright, informal seaside restaurant which overlooks the beautiful Torquay harbour. Run by chef proprietor, Simon Hulstone and his wife Katy, it was the first restaurant in Torquay to be awarded a Michelin star which it has maintained for 15 years. The Elephant is relaxed, friendly and serves the best value Michelin starred lunch in the UK. We aim to source our ingredients locally and sustainably, many from the restaurant’s dedicated farm in Brixham but we do look further afield if it’s something we’re really excited about. All the dishes change regularly depending on which locally grown and reared ingredients are at their best. The Elephant welcomes children of all ages however we no longer except dogs unless they are service dogs and we have been given prior notice. SIMON HULSTONE - Simon has been cooking professionally since his school days and is one of the UK’s most decorated chefs. By his early teens he already had several World Junior titles to his name and until 2011, he was the only British Chef to win gold in the World Skills in France. In 2003, Simon won the Roux Scholarship and he went on to win the Craft Guild of Chefs National Chef of the Year award in 2008. Simon has twice represented the UK in the Bocuse d’Or, the world’s most challenging and prestigious culinary contest. He was captain of the British team in the Culinary Olympics and was also captain of the English Culinary Team at the Culinary World Cup in 2010 and 2012. Passionate about the local produce and area, Simon is a self-made ambassador for the English Riviera and its fantastic produce. Angels is a wonderful little surprise. This tea room and daytime restaurant bustles from the moment the doors are open. Fine bone china and loose leaf tea with home made scones, local jams and Devonshire cream make this a must stop for cream tea lovers every where. Locals rave about the breakfast and visitors jostle for a seat in a delightful garden courtyard for lunch. Fresh local produce used to great effect and a stunning view of Lyme Bay thrown in for free. Traditionally English through and through! Dogs are welcome on the outside terrace. MENU Welcome to Babbacombe Bay on Devon’s English Riviera! In 1846, Queen Victoria wrote: 'It's a beautiful spot... red cliffs and rocks with wooded hills like Italy and reminding one of a ballet or play where nymphs appear — such rocks and grottoes, with the deepest sea on which there was no ripple.' Over 150 years later, it still feels the same as you stand and look across the beautiful bay. The delightful gardens at Babbacombe Downs have attained the prestigious Green Flag award, an international accolade recognising the high environmental standards, excellent visitor facilities and maintenance of the site.

Theatre

An asset to the English Riviera for over eighty years Babbacombe Theatre is renowned for wowing audiences with their highly acclaimed family variety shows, most especially since 1986 when Matpro Limited took over the venue. From its earliest days, the theatre had many years of successful summer shows and it became known for its reputation of hosting household names on the threshold of their careers, including in 1955/56 Bruce Forsyth, who headlined in the Hedley Claxton’s ‘Gaytime’. From its heyday in the 1970s, successive failures in the early 1980s led to the council deciding to close the theatre, however Colin Matthews, who had been operating the theatre since 1986 took on a new lease in 1990. Since then, he has turned the venue into one of the most successful theatres of its size in the country. Colin still owns and operates the venue, and his achievements continue to be recognised. Apart from winning, the award for, Outstanding Contribution to Tourism in 2016, his efforts to maintain 5-star entertainment at the venue, has meant the theatre is now ranked on TripAdvisor, as the Number 1 ‘Things to Do’ in Torquay as well as the Number 1 venue under Theatres and Performances in Torquay. The venue with its extended season running from February to October, as well as the visiting touring shows providing early and late dates, and the now regular Christmas Show, the Babbacombe Theatre has productions running virtually throughout the year. New shows are constantly added to the theatre’s programme of events, with many household names specifically requesting to appear on the Babbacombe boards. To keep abreast of who you can see appearing at this celebrated venue, refer to venues website alternatively contact the Box Office. The theatre has: Access for wheelchair users with an accessible toilet. Wheelchair spaces. Loop system.

The Princess Theatre is located on Torquay’s stunning seafront with exquisite views showing off Torbay’s scenic beauty. The theatre is located almost halfway between Torquay's iconic harbour and the famous Abbey Sands beach. It is within easy walking distance from both of these iconic landmarks therefore there is no reason to miss it! The theatre is a touring house which means that the shows that perform here are brought to us by independent production companies. As such, our diary offers a wide variety of live entertainment from operas and ballets to concerts, comedy and pantomime as well as touring West End musicals. Big musical productions that have thrilled our audiences include Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Chicago, Starlight Express, Rocky Horror, Cats, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with many more to come. Icons of the stage and screen Sir Roger Moore, Elaine Page, Joan Collins and the beloved Joan Rivers, have also graced our stage. Comedians Jimmy Carr, Alan Carr and Dawn French have performed here too and chart toppers Mumford & Sons, Jamie Cullum and Ronan Keating have included the theatre on their UK tours. The Princess Theatre also offers some hilarious entertainment with several top comedians visiting regularly such as Jasper Carrott, Jim Davidson, Joe Pasquale, Roy Chubby Brown and Jimmy Carr. The Princess Theatre really does offer something for everyone and this is evident by the high number of sell out shows each year. So, for a great night out on the English Riviera why not take in an evening of entertainment at Torquay’s Premier Theatre. We are proud to work together with the local community to show-off the talented stars of Torbay, with shows put on by amateur societies and local dance schools. We also provide the venue for council lead events and we are incredibly proud of our award-winning Nativity project when primary schools are given the opportunity to perform their Christmas plays on stage free of charge. Princess Theatre history The Princess Theatre first opened its doors on Wednesday 7 June 1961. Top of the bill on the opening night were the late, great Tommy Cooper and the legendary Morecombe & Wise. In 1963 The Beatles appeared live on stage singing the then newly released single “She Loves You” causing some hysteria in the town! The theatre has gone from strength to strength since then and has continued to pull in big name acts and sell-out shows ever since. Booking early for your favourite, is always recommended. The Princess Theatre has seen a wide variety of entertainment including comedians, musicals and West End shows and of course the pantomime for all the family. The Agatha Christie Company also pay us an annual visit to the theatre during the Agatha Christie Festival week in September. Princess Theatre seating The Princess Theatre is South Devon’s largest theatre with a seating capacity of 1,491. All these great shows and performers excite our audiences and continue to do so today so get your theatre tickets right here from ATG Tickets! Tickets for the Princess Theatre can be purchased via the box office, either in person or by calling 0844 871 7615. Alternatively bookings can be made online via the link on this page.
