Surf and Sea

Best kept secret (not so much after Instagram!) and one of my favourite waves and family adventure spots with sweeping views towards Seal Rocks. Walking along a stunning boardwalk under the canopy of towering cabbage palms, you'll pop out to a small wooden platform overlooking the turquoise waters and crystal white sand. Sturdy cars recommended as the road in can have a few pot-holes, or drive slowly!

Popular spot with keen fishermen, you can choose between the tranquil water of Smiths Lake on one side or the wild ocean beach on the other side. The southern end of the beach and lakeshore also forms the northern boundary of the Myall Lakes National Park. 4WD access to the beach is located at Bushlands and Sandbar Caravan Park. A beach permit is a requirement but I still haven't got one.. Just saying!

Forster's north facing Main Beach in the centre of town offers calm swimming conditions on most days making it a family favourite. The beach is patrolled throughout summer and nearby cafés Beach Bums Café and Wingman Espresso are great options for breakfast and lunch. One Mile Beach is Forster's biggest easterly facing beaches and a favourite for surfers and dolphins as well as being one of the best Burgess Beach is one of the most picturesque on the coast with rockpools amongst the towering rocks or head to the white sands of the southern beach, only accessed at low tide by walking around the headland. Tuncurry's Nine Mile Beach is another great surf spot and stretches from the Tuncurry's breakwall all the way to Black Head, also 4WD accessible with a beach permit. McBrides and Seven Mile Beaches of Booti Booti National Park in Forster's south offer adventure and fantastic fishing. McBrides Beach is accessed via foot on a tough track through the littoral rainforest of the Park. Be rewarded with a secluded wine-shaped beach and try to not think about the climb back out! S Seven Mile Beach stretches from Forster's southern tip to Pacific Palms and is a popular beach and rock fishing location. When the swell is on, be prepared for the carpark to be full of local and visiting surfers with conditions providing one of the cleanest waves in the region.

Sightseeing

Great little hike to Seal Rocks lighthouse, an active lighthouse located on Sugarloaf Point and overlooks an unspoilt beach and the group of offshore rocky outcrops which give the area its name. It was built 1874-75 and is one of only two lighthouse towers in Australia with an external stairway. It still uses the original main light which consists of a 16-sided catadioptric system of lenses and curved mirrors. It's a short, easy but hilly hike and one of the best sightseeing adventures for the family.
