Neighborhoods

A small friendly village with a quirky demographic of people. Situated between an inland wilderness area just up the road from the Cape Point Nature Reserve and the restless expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, Kommetjie exudes that unique charm you get with small seaside enclaves. Here you will find mixture of old (wizened fisher folk, eclectic salty ocean souls and new agers, retirees and sailors) and young (families with kids, surfers and skateboarders). A slipway caters for boats on the high tide, while the infamous Outer Kom surf spot breaks beyond the kelp. For the less serious surfer, the Inner Kom is a mellow lefthander where the wave energy dissipates and reforms along the inside of small protected bay - a 'bowl' of water protected by the elements. This body of water (Kommetjie means 'little bowl' in Dutch) is perfect for kayaking and swimming. This beautiful coastline is a magical corner of the southern Cape Peninsula far from the bustle of the city, and secluded from suburbia. The key tourist destination is Cape Point, the spine of rocks that marks the end of the Cape Peninsula, and the beautiful reserve in which it lies. However, Table Mountain, the cable car and the city sights are not too far away. It takes about 45 minutes to reach the city from Kommetjie, and 15 minutes to the other side of the peninsula to False Bay, where the quaint villages of Simonston, Fish Hoek, Kalk Bay and Muizenberg are strewn along the waters' edge.
