“About FRANCESINHA
1950‘s
It’s said that Daniel da Silva, a Porto emigrant who returned from France, adapted the French croque monsieur toast to Portuguese tastes and called it francesinha (literally ‘little French girl’). You can find it at a number of places (try CAFÉ SANTIAGO). A definite calorie-bomb, it rivals tripe as the city’s signature dish. It’s a ‘sandwich’ served on a plate with two slices of bread, ham, sausages and steak. Covered in molten cheese, it also contains a sauce made from tomatoes and beer, as well as a few secret ingredients. ”
