Barter books is a fabulous secondhand book store, one of the largest in the country, and a real experience to visit. It has settees and log fires in which to sit and read (the settees, not the log fires), coffee and biscuits with an honesty box, and a small coffee shop. Highly recommended

Alnwick Castle is a lovely place to visit, home of the Duke of Northumberland. The castle gardens are also open to public, having been beautifully restored with fountains and water features. The Harry Potter films were filmed here. There is also a fabulous restaurant, the Treehouse.

Cragside is a delightful National Trust property - the first house in the county to be powered by hydro electricity. The gardens are a wonder in the spring and summer. Beware that the gardens are quite hilly.

Bamburgh Castle is one of the most spectacular sights in the country. Viewed from the beach, it stands on a cliff guarding the Northumberland coast. It is an inhabited castle, and full of history. The beach is wonderful itself, with miles of white sand. A lovely place for a walk.

It's a short boat trip out round the islands to see them, but well worth the trip if you are into nature, (and not too worried by Alfred Hitchcocks 'The Birds'!)
Otherwise known as 'The Lady of the North', this lovely country park and landscape sculpture is one of the newest attractions in the area. There is a visitor centre, cafe and toilets, and it's a great place to take a long walk around the lady.
