Food scene

I cannot give this spot more of a recommendation. I've had the best sandwich of my life here, seriously. Like, I want to jump through the screen and shake you to get my point across on this place - it's a must go. The Focaccia bread is beyond delightful, perfectly baked with just the right amount of salt. They update their menu daily, but legitimately the best sandwich I've ever had was the brisket. That being said, you cannot go wrong. The meats, greens...everything is so damn fresh and delicious. I personally love going on early morning hikes, usually the trail in the backyard of the cabin (Balsam Lake Mountain Fire Tower Trail) and then head to this spot afterwards for lunch. It's a short drive over to Fleischmanns, the town over from Margaretville. I can't think of a better way to start my day.

This is an amazing go-to coffee spot in town. They have wonderful pastries in the morning, and the sandwiches are really fresh and wonderful as well.

Freshtown is a supermarket conveniently located in Margaretville. They have everything you'd be looking for with a grocery store, definitely a good place to stock up for your cabin visit. There's also a CVS next door should you need anything from a pharmacy or convenience store that the supermarket may not have.

Peekamoose is a really awesome restaurant in Big Indian, right off 28 about 20 minutes from the cabin. I often stop there on the way up to the cabin if it is around dinner time, or similarly if I leave later in the evening and want to grab food before the journey home. Everything is locally sourced and served in a restored farmhouse. The vibe is really cool, it feels more like you are in a home than a restaurant in a lot of ways. Nothing hits the spot like a medium rare steak here at the end of the day.

Oakley's is my forever go-to for pizza, burgers, and just generally filling food in the area. They have a cool little deck for outdoor dining, and the interior is super warm and cozy. I also can't tell you how many times I've picked up take out from here. When I don't want to cook a meal or can't decided what I want to eat, I often default to this safe haven comfort food spot.

Italian spot in town served out of a home on the main street in town. It honestly doesn't really feel like a restaurant out all, more like a meal in your family member's home.

The go-to ice cream spot in Margaretville, no questions asked. I had their cookies and cream ice cream in a cup the other day and almost cried tears of joy at how good it was. If you're in the mood for ice cream on a hot summer day, it doesn't get better than this.

Amazing local farmer’s market, incredibly beautiful both around the barn and inside. This is a really perfect Saturday morning activity (it’s only open on Saturdays) - they have vendors for everything imaginable. Incredibly fresh food, unique artisan products, etc. I have this listed under food scene but it’s certainly much more than that.

I'm including this under the food section given they do serve BBQ, but I really just wanted to highlight the bowling alley (there are better food options on my list). This is a good place to go if the weather is less conducive to outdoor activities, or you just love to bowl!

Phoenicia Diner is a wonderful pit stop on your way to the cabin, or on the way back home. It's about 30 minutes away, and is as classic of a diner as you could get.

Adventure

This is the trail in the backyard of the cabin! Walk out of the driveway and make a right, you should hit the trailhead in about 30 seconds. The fire tower trail is an out-and-back that takes about 2.5-3 hours depending on your pace and how long you hang at the top of the trail. At the top, you'll see the fire tower, where you can climb for some of the best views in the Catskills! You can also continue beyond the fire tower to other trails on the mountain afterwards. In general, I recommend you download the "All Trails" app on your phone. You can see details on this trail here, make sure you are looking at this trail and not the one in Livingston Manor: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/new-york/balsam-lake-mountain-via-dry-brook-ridge-trail--2

The Pepacton Reservoir is really beautiful, and is available to use for paddling, kayaking, and fishing. The cabin is about 30 minutes away, and there are several access points to the reservoir. You do need to apply for a permit ahead of time to access the water, but the process is pretty straightforward.
