Hiking

Many trail options of varying degrees of difficulty from meander to serious hiker. Great views, clean, well organized.

Sky Meadows State Park

Bear’s Den-This hike just off the Appalachian Trail provides the best view per effort required. Although it has a few steep sections, it’s only about 1 mile to a beautiful view of the valley. And if even that sounds too ambitious, park at the Bears Den Hostel, just ½ mile up 601 from Route 7, where you’ll walk less than ½ mile to the overlook or enjoy other short trails ($3 fee). Parking for the hike can be found where Route 7 meets 601. Can be crowded on weekends.

During “Somm Sundays” at Slater Run Vineyards, sommelier Sara Gann leads groups of up to ten in a tasting of six wines—one made at Slater Run and five from around the world—accompanied by a small plate of snacks such as cheese and charcuterie. Past themes have included Bordeaux-inspired wines made outside of Bordeaux as well as “Sparkling: Pét Nat to Champagne.” Slater Run’s Chardonnay Reserve 2020 will be featured this month in its fall theme, “Do You Know the Way to Chardonnay?” Each tasting is $30 a person and is in a private indoor tasting room. 1500 Crenshaw Rd., Upperville.
