Sightseeing

This scenic easy to walk park provides charcoal grills, open space, and a walk through an old town often staffed with characters who will talk about it's role in the underground railroad. Along the Vermilion river where fishing and sea glass can both be enjoyed. In the fall the tree canopy is bursting with colors. In the winter it has the ideal sledding hill.

This wetland is protected and offers great sightseeing opportunity for all forms of nature watchers. Fishing is ideal since it is one of the drop off points for the local hatcheries. However it is catch and release only . There is enough to fill a whole day with memories.

A cool interactive wildlife reserve with lots of animals you are not normally going to find in Ohio. They sell you feed bags and let you feed them right from your hand. This up close and personal look at these exotic animals is unique.

Food scene

Great little dive bar with award winning burgers. And if you can catch them when they have their perch sandwich on the menu, don't hesitate. It is amazing. They also have one of the most extensive offering of Bourbon in these parts as well as often a good handle or two of regional brews. This friendly bar is a great place to get to meet the locals.

This wonderful riverside restaurant has all your favorites from bar fare. Known for their wings probably more than their steak, the Vermilion location also has fish on their menu. The view of the bigger boats that won't fit under the Vermilion Bridge and the sailing vessels adds to the quaint ambiance.

This is 5 star, make a reservation, bring your wallet dining. The master chefs specialize in French cuisine and fine wine. This Vermilion gem has been the destination of impressive dining and romantic evenings for over 40 years. The view along the side of the River just at the bend is without a doubt the best on the river. I recommend you take the Mystic Bell over for an extra memorable evening.

Looking for a great steak with "No Bull" service. This place has been a staple in the outlands between Vermilion and Huron for 40 years. Their Steaks have been rated #1 in the region for the entire time. It seems like a train depot that is set at the end of a rural highway, and it kind of is. This place is for steak lovers and that is all you really need to know.

This is Ohio's Oldest Creamery. They have more flavor than you can shake an utter at. Bring your appetite. If order anything bigger than a "kid's cone" I hope you had a light lunch. The ice cream is second to none. But that is something you will have to judge for yourself. Around these parts there are very few who would dispute it. They don't have it often, but my favorite is "Gram Central Station".

This local Winery as been in vermilion for over a decade now. They have wonderful selections of wine. But they also server a great menu that pairs well with their finest. (Don't be shocked if I don't slip you a taste bottle as part of your stay. I have a habit of sharing especially if I think you are a couple making a romantic get away.) Please mention that you are guests at the Hibiscus house. It probably won't get you any special treatment but I always hope for a bottle of their mead on the house for me.

Neighborhoods

This is the most high energy, youth oriented islands of the "Bass" chain. In the summer there is an insatiable party life in the evening. But, don't let the party atmosphere lead you to believe there isn't plenty for a family with younger kids to explore. I have spent entire days there with my young ones exploring the monuments and learning history of the war of 1812. And the Sunny S will take you to Middle Bass for just $5 each way. A wonderful side trip on any day.

The largest of the Islands that make up "Lake Erie Shores and Islands". This island is home to everything from a 4H camp, to a national state park, to a pretty lively nightlife of it's own. Two larger marinas. A family can spend days here and still not realize they had missed a thing to do or see. Golf Crat rental is a must if you are not taking your car over on the ferry.

City/town information

Middle Bass is "The Quiet Island". While it has two great bar/ restaurants with good food, this Island has very limited attendance and it dark and quiet when the sun goes down. There is lots to hike and see, but mostly it's a great place to have a picnic and get away from the .world for awhile.

IF you are looking for some fun thing to do with your furry family member, check out Rocky & Lela's. A small shop with a bubbly and attentive owner. She makes some of her own dog treats. I highly recommend them. But watch out. Mine seems to have found an addiction. Please Tell her The Hibiscus House sent you and she might give you some extras.
