Right, we know...everybody recommends the MOB. But there is a reason for that! This place is the real deal! The owner, Perry Rasso, grew up fishing in Rhode Island. His internationally renowned restaurant is supplied with his own oysters, raised in the waters visible from the dining room, and much of the restaurant's menu is inspired by the fresh produce from their nearby farm. Often a two hour wait, always worth it. Scope out a spot in the outdoor lounge & order a dozen or two oysters & bottle of Sauvignon blanc while you wait!

Built in the 1790’s, the Oliver Watson House is the oldest structure on URI’s campus. In 1888, local citizens purchased the 140-acre Watson Farm for $5,000 as a site for an agricultural experiment station and school. Little did they know the educational seed they planted would bloom into a distinguished university with a world-renowned reputation. The house has served as a residence for the farm manager, a women’s dormitory, the home of Lambda Chi Fraternity, then a men’s dormitory, and a tea room operated by the Department of Home Economics. Included on the National Register of Historic Places, the Rhode Island General Assembly ordered the building of the Conanicut Battery in 1776. The original fort was a simple earthwork, designed to house and protect six to eight heavy cannon and their men. The British captured the fort in December 1776 and occupied it until October 1779. In the early 1900’s six underground observation posts were constructed on the top of Prospect Hill, just east of the 1776 battery. From there, military observers had an unobstructed view of the approaches to Narragansett Bay and of the mine fields laid in the East and West Passages during World War I and World War II.

Much time and effort have been spent to determine the tower's origin. Most popular theory is that it was built by Norsemen before Columbus' voyage; academic theory has it built by a Colonial farmer. Located in scenic Touro Park on Bellevue Avenue across the street from the Newport Art Museum and Redwood Library. This is the base of the “stone wind mill” mentioned in Benedict Arnold Sr.’s will.

The Jamestown to Newport Ferry provides access to Rose Island, located a mile offshore and beyond the reach of Newport¹s utility lines and services. The Lighthouse stands as an independent, energy-efficient building that was home to keepers and their families for over a hundred years. Tours of the lighthouse, living quarters, and Fort Hamilton barracks are offered. Originally constructed in 1780, during the Revolutionary War, the island later became part of the U.S. Naval Torpedo Station, and during World War I and World War II, Fort Hamilton was used for munitions storage by the U.S. Navy as it conducted torpedo tests. Rhode Island is the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution. Located in Pawtucket is Slater Mill, which is North America’s first water-powered cotton spinning mill. Samuel Slater, who was born in England in 1768, moved to America in 1789. At the time, British laws forbid exporting details concerning the spinning mill outside of the country, so he memorized the plans instead. With the plans in his head and the backing of a partner named Moses Brown, Samuel built the mill in 1793, starting the framework for the Industrial Revolution. Prosperity ended with the burning of Newport during the Revolution, and the farm settled into a pattern of absentee ownership. Today, A weekly farmers’ market, held on Saturday mornings, held from May to October offers products from other local farms. Farmed continuously since 1672, this farm has bucked the development trend in Southern RI. Many small farms like the Briggs Farm, were unable to compete with larger operations as the value of farm real estate more than doubled between 1880 and 1950. Purchased by the Boesch family in 1954, the farm’s legacy was ensured in 2001, when the East Greenwich Municipal Land Trust purchased the property from the family with the intention of preserving the property as open space. Rhode Island was founded on the idea of religious freedom. Built in 1699 in Newport, the Meeting House is one of the oldest structures in the state and showcases the influence and importance the Quakers had in the area. In 1905, it ceased being a Meeting House, instead becoming a recreational center for African-Americans until the 1970’s, when it was donated to the Historical Society and restored. It has a plain design, but that is the point. Inside the building, you will not find steeples, statues, or stained glass windows, but rather a stripped down interior that fits quite well with the Quakers’ ideas for proper worship centering around simplicity.

Dedicated in 1763, the building was designated a National Historic Site in 1946. The building was spared from being torn down and used as firewood during the British occupation of Newport, because it was used as a hospital for Brittish troops. Currently, it’s the oldest surviving synagogue in the US, and still operates as an active place of worship. In 1790, George Washington defended religious freedom in a letter "To the Hebrew Congregation in Newport," stating that the new nation would give "to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance." Tours include a half hour seated presentation in Touro Synagogue and two floors of exhibits in the Loeb Visitors Center at 52 Spring St.

The Library opened this classic Venetian Renaissance building in March 1900. Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the Library is a prime example of turn-of-the-century American architecture. Providence Public Library differs from most, in that it is privately governed and supported, but it serves the people in the best “public” sense of the word. The Alfred Brownell collection of ship models is on permanent display in the Ship Room, and the Paul C. Nicholson whaling collection includes a number of both artistic pieces of scrimshaw and several hundred logbooks from whaling vessels.Guided architectural tours of the historic library are offered every other Tuesday.

If you want to look at beautiful fresco paintings but can’t afford a trip to Europe, you could instead travel to Woonsocket and see the largest collection in North America. The former Catholic Church was built in 1913 to serve the local French-Canadian community, but it was closed in 2000. Today, it’s now a non-profit organization and open for weddings, concerts, tours, and other events. However, the biggest draw is the main chapel area, with the walls and ceilings covered with beautiful hand-painted artwork that features over 475 faces of angels, saints, and other forms of divinity. Coming here is like seeing the Sistine Chapel and discovering a true hidden treasure.

RI's first Farm Brewery. Their tap room is located in an historic barn. You can tour the brewery, and take a walk through the fields to see, touch, and smell the ingredients that go into your beer. These small batch, hand-crafted ales are best enjoyed fresh and in season so be sure to make the trek early and often for a true farm-to-pint experience. This place is very popular, lines can be long especially when there is a popular can release. The beer is very good, lots of IPA's. It’s a good thing this is such a pleasant place to be: once you’ve made the drive out to Little Compton, you’re going to want to stay a while. Daily tours are offered on the hour from 12-3pm. Every day except Tuesday, the Cafe serves lunch. Closes at 5:00 pm

The place where the cool kids go. Between the reggae night, funk, retro 45 spinning DJs, karaoke, solid bills, sea-shanty sing-alongs and the best sound mix for a venue its size, The Parlour always seems to be wearing sunglasses no matter what time of day it is, plus it’s just close enough to Pawtucket to never sell out. On the recommendation of Pete Seeger, a collection of local musicians started the coffeehouse in 1981 in the historic Slater Mill. The old wooden beams, floor and ceiling give the 120-seat venue a characteristic sound that Stone Soup’s Eric Anderson likens to “performing inside a cello.” The Stone Soup books acoustic performances from Americana through singer-songwriter, blues and a blend of modern interpretations of the genres using both traditional and non-traditional instruments. Armed with nothing but coffee generously supplied by the Coffee Exchange, the Stone Soup looks to provide organic music as it should be: a product of place from unplugged musicians to the people.
