everyone needs a little jerk in their lives! (I'm talking here...about chicken, goat, pork, or lobster) One note: it is hard to get a table for a big group here, especially on a weekend. Go early!

at 15 or so dollars, the burger ain't cheap, but it ranks in our all-time top ten. Mayfield has an early but excellent happy hour with discounted beer, wine, well drinks, and, oysters. Be fast. It ends at 6:30PM.

Okay, so it looks more like a coffee shop, but this place conjures up amazing fare from seasonal veggies, delicious meats, and yes, critical concoctions from the bean of caffeine. My favorite dish here is the Ensalada di Casa with roasted roots vegetables, avocado, mushrooms, and quinoa. My daughter's is the skirt steak. I think this is Equadorean cuisine, but it's true provenance is Heaven!

I remember reading that this amazing Thai home-cooking spot is run by members of one family from several generations. That's why you can really feel (and taste) the love here! If my mom or grandma was Thai, this is what I would want their cooking to be like: delightful and suprising comfort food. Yes, you can find typical top-sellers like Pad Thai here, but we recommend the more unusual offerings like pork belly, simultaneously crispy and tender, served over 'shrimp paste' rice. LOOK is kind to offer medium, mild, and non-spicy versions of these dishes, but beware: many would consider their medium to be ear-steam hot.

The staff at this unusual Japanese establishment take so much pride in their work and food, with great sake and fish selections! We always order "abstract garden," a chef's choice of unpredictable appetizers and amuse-bouche.

Okay, it looks like a museum, but its more hands-on than most. If you brought young kids to Brooklyn, this will keep them happy. Last time I went, there were albino snakes, a scaled down town for kids to run, and a working garden during the warm months. And it's only 3 blocks away from the apartment.

I know KFC is not the MTA, but this is where the A and C subway lines leave for downtown Brooklyn and Manhattan. (The A is express and the C is local.) You can access most parts of Manhattan here and by transferring to connecting lines at Jay Street Borough Hall or Nassau Fulton St. If you travel in the other direction from the Nostrand Avenue stop, you can ride the A to the Rockaways or transfer at Howard Beach to the AirTrain for JFK.
