Food Scene

This is a truly authentic cozy little Italian spot in the bottom floor of a house in Red Hook. The food is delicious and we love to sit at the bar and chat with the bartender who has lived in the area for 20+ years. Make a reservation on the weekends. They are closed Monday-Wednesday.

Anyone who knows Red Hook knows Holy Cow. It's the best ice cream in the area and you won't be disappointed. Be prepared to wait in line on summer weekends, but it's worth it!

This is one of the hipper spots in the area for dinner, brunch or drinks. It just opened in spring 2017, but it already has quite a following. The interior is gorgeous, the food is refined American focusing on local ingredients, and they make a very good cocktail. We go here on date nights. You'll definitely need a reservation on the weekends.

Bread Alone is a local chain of small bakeries. You can buy their bread all over the region, but the bakeries have so much more. Grab coffee and pastries for breakfast, or soup, salads, sandwiches, quiche, and more for lunch. There are two seating areas so you can stay awhile.

This is the cutest and most delicious diner in the area -- and there are a lot to choose from. It opened in the 1920s and is one of the last remaining examples of this kind of roadside architecture. Go on a weekday and you'll be surrounded by men in their 70s and 80s that meet up and chat about local politics every morning. Go on the weekends and it's full of sleepy Bard students. The food and service are always great. You can't beat it for breakfast.

Essentials

This is our favorite local grocery store. It's a cross between a giant regular store and a Whole Foods. It has a huge natural foods section within it and a fantastic bakery, meat and fish counter, and they focus a lot on local produce.

This is the other grocery store in the area. TOPS will definitely have anything you might need (it's so big it has a Starbucks inside) at good prices.

This is the other drug store in the area. If you happen to be in Rhinebeck, go to this one. But, the Red Hook one is a little closer to our house.

This is the closest gas station to the house -- right off the Taconic. There is a little Dunkin Donuts in there as well as a pretty big convenience store.

Entertainment & Activities

We love this classic bowling alley. This is more like the bowling alleys of your childhood than the fancy ones in NYC, but it's just as fun and half the price. We love the 90s-era computer graphics on the scoreboards and that they promote any celebrity that has ever bowled there and their score. Who knew Paul Rudd was a good bowler?!

This is the closest regular movie theater to the house. It's nothing fancy, but they have all the latest releases and they still do matinee pricing!

This is a great little indie movie theater right on Mill St. in Rhinebeck. There are only two screens, but they play the latest indie releases as well as re-releases of classic films. They are a non-profit with another theater in Woodstock, so you can feel good about supporting them!
