This 230 hectare city naturereserve is managed by Natuurpunt amongst 500 areas, together 22.800 hectare, in Flanders. They are an independent Volunteers Association dedicated to protect and preserve vulnerable and endangered nature. The beautiful Bourgoyen has a Environmental Center, at the main entrance, which holds a permanent exhibition about the reserve and passive housing. As the reserve is home to many hibernating bird species it has two birdwatch posts and it is a hot spot for wildlife photographers. Main entrance at Driepikkelstraat 32, 9030 Mariakerke

Definitly the nicest way to get introduced to Ghent! The hole year round, every 20 minutes, there's a departure for a 40 minutes guided boat tour (NL/EN/FR/DE) throught the Medieval centre of Ghent. Or you can take the watertram and hop on & hop off at different locations (check hoponhopoff.be website for more info)
