Serving primarily Western mains, this is the perfect place to sip a glass of wine and watch the sun set, though it is quite popular for lunch too. Very well regarded for its steaks and ribs makes it a comforting change from the beachside mat scene by the waterfront.

Parks & Nature

Phromthep Cape is the island's most photographed and perhaps best-known location. Every evening, large tour buses, scooters and private cars sweep through Rawai Beach and up the island's southernmost hill in order to watch the sunset at its peak. Phromthep also has a lighthouse that houses interesting historical maritime artifacts and commands spectacular views over the east and southeast of the island and its environs. If you go up to the outdoors viewing balcony you can see the distinctive shapes of the Phi Phi Islands, Koh Racha Yai and Koh Racha Noi on a clear day and of course a whole raft of nearer islands such as nearby Koh Kiaow with its Buddhist monastery.

Ao Sane, a rocky beach on Phuket's southwest coast, is one of the island's loveliest secrets. The diving and snorkeling at this beach is exemplary and the beach's character is encapsulated best by the word, 'tranquil'. Ao Sane has enough trees lining its perimeters to provide shelter from the sun at all times of day and also has ample sand space for sun lovers, too.

Coral Island, known locally as Koh Hae, is a beautiful getaway destination located three kilometres southeast of Phuket. The island features two main beaches, Long Beach and Banana Beach. It's not called Coral Island for nothing; the snorkeling off Banana Beach is thrilling and if you go out far enough from Long Beach you will also have a lot to discover, at its impressive coral reef. At night this location is beautifully calm; by day it is quite busy with day trippers but peace and quiet can be found at the extremities of both beaches. Deck chairs and sun loungers can be rented

The Racha islands (or Raya Islands), some 12 km south of Phuket, are best known as excellent diving and snorkelling daytrip destinations. Racha Yai reveals itself in splendid fashion, with most arrivals landing onto a strip of fine white sand tucked deep into the long, U-shaped main bay, called Ao Tawan Tok or Ao Bungalow. The water here is clear and perfect for snorkelling, though the bay gets quite busy with visiting boats in the afternoons. The other large bay, Ao Siam, is a pretty place where lonely strolls in solitude are possible. Racha Noi is uninhabited and has no services or accommodation, but there's some great diving in the area.

Rawai holds the distinction of being the very first tourist beach on Phuket. Years ago, people from Phuket Town would drive the 17km to Rawai on weekends to while away the afternoon underneath the beach's casuarina trees rather than risk the (then) dangerous drive over the hill to Phuket's west coast. Nowadays, Rawai is a 'working beach' and a launching point for day boat excursions out to Phuket's surrounding islands. Many long-tail boats available for hire line its shores, where you can arrange a trip to nearby island or a fishing or snorkelling trip. The beach is also used as a mooring point for the many fishermen who live in the area.

Nai Harn is increasingly one of the island's more popular destinations. Once known only to in-the-know locals, it has been very firmly "discovered". However, as the small bay is home to only a few hotels, restaurants and shops, it retains its quiet charm. Great for swimming from November to April, care should be take in the low season (May-October) when there can be strong currents. The local restaurants just above the beach make a great place to relax with a sundowner.

Wats - or Buddhist temples - are among the most important symbols of Thailand, partly because the majority of Thais are Buddhist and partly because they are so beautiful. In Phuket alone, there are 29 Buddhist temples spread around the island. Wat Chalong has been extending a warm welcome to visitors for over a century. Locals come to pray and Westerners come to learn something about Buddhism. The temple is open from seven in the morning to five in the afternoon.
