Head to the Mahebourg Waterfront for excellent fruit pickles (confits) and fresh coconuts from the street stall. Also try the "merveille", sort of a Mauritan version of the papadum. Eat with tamarind sauce or chilli/ coriander sauce.

Located across the road from the beach, the restaurant offers good Chinese Mauritian food. Generous portions. The restaurant gets really busy so best to book ahead to avoid waiting in line.

You will need a car to get to the location. Predominantly local chinese food, recommend the seafood. Stunning setting, in colonial-style pavilions over the water. Great for a romantic dinner.

Trou aux Biches is one of my favourite beaches in Mauritius. Perfect conditions for swimming and snorkeling. The shallow and calm waters make it ideal for families with kids.

It is one of the most iconic hikes on the island, with stunning views of the southwest corner of the island. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008 in recognition of its function as a refuge for freed slaves in the 19th and early 20th century. The trail to the minor summit is easy to follow and not very physically demanding. However, climbing is required to get to the true summit, and there are a few sections that are steep where using your hands is advisable. This second part is quite a difficult climb. Note: It is very exposed to the sun so an early start is recommended. Gates are sometimes closed for renovation, look up Yanature for guide (at a cost).

Experience swimming with the dolphins, snorkeling in clear waters and a breathtaking view of the Crystal Rock. The crews typically depart from La Jetee Road in Grande Riviere Noire early morning. Find and book online or visit the tourist information centre at Pasadena Shopping Centre.

This place absolutely is a must-see if you are in Mauritius. You can book speedboats or catamarans (shared) via several suppliers online. There are water sports offered at a cost when you get to the island. The prices may differ dramatically (tourist prices) so make sure to ask around before! Try snorkeling in the area (ask the skippers as they know the best locations!) but beware or sea urchins and corals. Bring lots of sunscreen, and make sure to wear hats/ cover shoulders to avoid sunburns! Find and book online or visit the information centre at Pasadena Shopping Centre.
