It's got a slightly eclectic decor, it's the closest cafe to the house and it's good for coffee, a croissant, or some really high quality pastries. The vietnamese guy who owns the place is very friendly.

It's your standard argentinian style restaurant with a nice piping hot fire and an excellent wine list. The desserts are amazing - try the Nutella Pizza. I thought I'd hate it, but it was delicious and very generously proportioned.

This place takes things up a level in terms of cuisine. It has Italian origins with a very contemporary flare. The decor is lovely. The staff are nice. You can watch the chefs make your meal through the glass. Try the soft shell crab.

A little pricey but easily the best food for the price you'll get anywhere. Huge custom-made wood fire oven pizzas in the true Roman style. Amazing pastas. Sit outside under a marquis on a hot day.

Very similar level of quality to the Italian restaurants found on King William Road, but less of your money goes into the fine decor. Still a very nice restaurant experience and usually doe very good specials.

Adelaideans love their bakeries and the Hyde Park Bakery sets their standard. Find yourself a good meat pie, pasty, sausage roll, or if you have a sweet tooth there's a great variety of tarts, slices etc on offer. It's also perfect if you need to buy something big and yummy to share for an event you might be going to (eg. a quiche, a cake etc). Order a coffee and read the paper. On a warm day you can sit outside.

This is walking distance from the home and has a great menu of delicious breakfast foods and salads. Blueberry pancakes, smoothies, juices, good coffee and some very much not off the shelf salads. The staff are really lovely and will often have a chat. I like the interior because it is nice and airy and the colour scheme of the terrace on a hot day makes me feel a little like I'm in Santorini.

This is a great place winter or summer, but in summer the outside terrace is lovely to sit with friends and share a glass of wine. It has a great, culturally diverse menu and an excellent array of desserts. The specials board usually has something like fish and chips for $15 so if you want to stick to a budget it caters to you as well. The staff really know their wines - it's the primary reason the place exists - and will help you make a good selection from local and international wines.

This is a large, sheltered market with a wide range of specialty produce. Many locally produced meats, vegetables and delicacies are sold here. There's a fish market, sushi restaurants and china town is connected to it. Also a number of places that are good for breakfast. It is connected to gouger street, one of Adelaide's main restaurant strips where there is a meal to the taste and budget preferences of everybody.

Bookings are recommended but this is one of the best eating experiences I've had on Gouger Street. The venue is beautiful and the staff know their food, and the food (which is asian, some of it fusion) is amazing. Down the street a little way is an upstairs bar with great balcony views of the street. Book Concubine in advance and bring a bottle of wine or two.

Drinks & Nightlife

It's a nice suburban pub with a good family atmosphere in the evenings. You can eat well and keep an eye on the sports in the bar or eat in the restaurant. A few nights a week there is live music - usually a guitar player and a good track list.

This place is a bit further from the home but a much more lively affair than the low key Hyde Park Tavern. Huge big screens for watching sport or music videos, the bar is separated into several different dining functions. The bar menu is pub grub at its best.

If you're at a loss for something to do in Rundle Mall while everyone else is shopping go to the Richmond Hotel. There is a downstairs bar with sports betting and pub grub. Upstairs there is a balcony overlooking the city and an excellent wine menu. My Dad is the father of three girls and he knows this trick well.

Shopping

It is the iconic Rundle Mall, featuring the mall's balls, the centrepiece most Australians identify with Adelaide. Shops for all ages, tastes and preferences including David Jones and Myer, some good food courts. At one end there is Rundle Street for more high end designer shopping. At the other end is Hindley Street with eclectic, hipster vibes, independent book stores, and at the far wast end of it the student district with surrounding affordable and pleasant restaurants.

Burnside is an upmarket shopping mall in Adelaide's east, to get there from the home go straight up Greenhill Road by car (I'm not sure if there's a bus). High End brands like Mecca Cosmetica, Oroton, Saas and Bide, Carla Zampatti can all be found here along with middle market Australian staples.

Parks & Nature

Mount Lofty is a well known hiking trail for beginner to medium fitness hikers. At the base is a waterfall and a nice restaurant. At the top is a great view of the city and a nice restaurant (you can drive to the top if hiking isn't your think). Situated in and around Cleland Wildlife Park there are opportunities to see iconic Australian animals. There is also a beautiful botanic garden (the Mount Lofty Botanic Garden).

Getting Around

Victoria Square is the centre feature of Adelaide's CBD and most bus routes and the Adelaide tram go through it. Adelaide is a great city for bikes as well. If you get off at the Pirie Street tram stop and take a right down Pirie Street you can ask them where to rent a bike. Adelaide has a great combination of hills and flat plans that bike enthusiasts really appreciate.
