Best gelato and location in Brindisi. Pop in any time of the day or night, pay at the cashier, sip your drinks at the counter and sample local appetizers, pastries for breakfast, savouries for lunch, cakes for desert and icecream any time of the day and year. Sit outside in the restaurant area and pass the time of day people watching, a leisurely lunch or evening meal and sometimes live music.

Essentially a "Take away", My family call it the Lecce equivalent of "Greggs". Definitely not healthy! but a good experience, select a variety of stuffed and filled breads and deep fried savouries, wash down with local wine or draft beer. Best of all on a warm night, grab a table outside and watch the world walk by. Finish off at Pasticerria Natale, with something much more delicate.

Just a few hundred metres north from Rosa Marina resort entrance, is a narrow road leading to Torre Leonardo and the beach and dunes running all the way to Torre Cane. The car park in the summer is in a field just off the local narrow road that runs parallel to the SS16 on the Adriatic side

Another white city, this has fabulous views from it's terraces across the Itria valley. Good vantage point over some of the other white towns of the area. It's also a real foodies haven!

A bit further afield, however, not usually too bad a journey, as the access and roads are quite good. Beautiful town and ancient port. Take a cool box with a picnic and drinks and your swim gear. Take a dip in the sea, the water is clean and the bay shallow. Potter through the centro storico and nosey in the tourist shops, take in the vibrantly colourful painted local ceramics. Combine with an evening stop off in Lecce on your return.

Attractive port and historic town. Just meander the cobbled streets and walk around it's circumference, maybe even go down on to the beach and take a dip in the Ionian sea. Different from Otranto, similar distance and worth combining with a stop in Lecce .

Pretty cliff top town with good views into caves. Watch the locals as they dive from the rocks in to the sea in the cove, climb back out and clamber back through the caves and up the cliffs back to the top so they can dive back in again. A couple of beautiful viewing spots hidden in the ancient historical town, looking up the coast towards Bari

Saturday morning, large market, good for fresh produce and the usual array of market goods. Parking can be difficult, find the market on the inner side of the perimeter road running round Ostuni.

Auchan hypermarket, open seven days a week. Good stopping point when coming out of Brindisi, air conditioned, free wifi, bright and clean. Also situated at this edge of town shopping complex, one or two other superstores This is the supermarket I favour and tend to use when driving out of Brindisi, quieter always in the afternoon. There are also a number of boutique type stores in the mall. Useful to stop here en route from the airport.
