Things to do in San Juan

Old San Juan may be a place many visitors come to see, but it’s also where many locals eat, drink, and shop. The area’s candy-colored architecture and cobblestone streets remind you that this is a city with a deep cultural history, one shaped by Spanish, African and indigenous Taíno cultures for centuries. For a neighborhood near the beach, head to Calle Loíza for nightlife, locally owned shops, and restaurants. Walk the barrios and discover local life for yourself in places such as the arts district of Santurce.

Whether you stay in the city, or just outside of it, San Juan has a whole other nightlife scene. Bioluminescent bays glow across Puerto Rico, and one of the closest ones to San Juan is Laguna Grande in Fajardo. Head out in kayaks with a guide for a light show like no other as the water and the night skies twinkle with activity.

Go sailing with a local expert

See La Fortaleza, Castillo San Felipe del Morro, Castillo de San Cristóbal, Isla de Cabras, and Old San Juan from a different perspective with a local captain on a sailing excursion.

Head out with a local wildlife lover to Escambron Marine Park, a special little bay that is home to extraordinary marine life. See a variety of tropical fish, a sunken bridge, statues, and (hopefully) turtles.

Visit Culebra on a catamaran

This slice of paradise is meant to be enjoyed in the comfort of a catamaran. Snorkeling at Culebra is an experience all its own, one where you see giant neon-hued coral reefs and schools of fish darting from one place to another. A highlight includes free time on Flamenco Beach, which has made the top of many best beaches lists. Its remote location makes it a quiet and wonderful place to do some yoga, swim, and just be present.
