A great pub if you're looking for a bit to eat or just a refreshing pint after a walk up the Cat's Back / Black Hill.

Our local gastro pub! Walk there from your cottage - across the fields or along the lane... great riverside pub!

“The Carpenters Arms, Walterstone HR2 0DX. Situated under the eastern ridge of the Black Mountains, close to the border with Wales, the Carpenters Arms has been in the same family for generations. The three hundred year old pub is now run by Vera Watkins, who was born there and has been the landlady since taking over from her mother forty years ago.”

Restaurant
“An historic 17th Century Inn, it is situated close to what was known as the Lion Gate, one of the original entrances into the medieval walled town of Hay-on-Wye. It is believed that parts of the building date back to the 1300’s. The Old Black Lion certainly has a colourful history and it is reputed that Oliver Cromwell stayed at the Inn whilst the Roundheads besieged Hay Castle. This pub is always a great visit, we have had many a tasty meal here. It is also dog friendly in the bar room which has a lovely fire.”
