The Selva del Lamone Nature Reserve Guardian of fairy woods, unspoiled nature and fascinating historical testimonies On the border between Lazio and Tuscany, extending between the villages of Farnese and Pitigliano, is the magnificent and precious Selva del Lamone Regional Nature Reserve, which protects one of the most intact and wild woods in Lazio. The forest grew on an ancient lava flow formed between 150,000 and 50,000 years ago. The historical and archaeological evidence that falls within the protected area such as bridges, fortified villages, Roman roads, places of worship, necropolis and so on are also valuable. A true jewel of unspoiled nature that hides vestiges of an ancient past that still today will not fail to fascinate the tourist. What to see Almost all of the Selva del Lamone is covered by woods, while the rest is occupied by agricultural areas. The wood is made up of turkey oak plants flanked by hornbeam, hornbeam, hazelnut. These are joined by other trees typical of the Mediterranean climate including holm oak, downy oak and phillyrea. Finally, we also point out the field maple, the minor maple and the manna ash. The agricultural areas are characterized by vineyards, olive groves, orchards and meadows used for grazing. The area protected by the Selva del Lamone Regional Nature Reserve holds other unmissable surprises: the Olpeta River flows through the dense woods, marking part of the southern border of the Reserve. Along its banks there are idyllic and suggestive views. At particular times of the day, the light that filters through the trees and reflects on the water of the stream creates a mosaic of lights and shadows that make this place an ideal destination for nature photography enthusiasts. One of the major attractions of the Selva del Lamone are the two spectacular waterfalls; that of Pelicotonno and the more famous Salabrone waterfall. Also worth seeing is the pleasant Cistercian abbey of Santa Maria di Sala. Dating back to the 12th century, it was restored between 2013 and 2014. It is a small rural church, perfectly integrated into the surrounding landscape, and easily accessible from the village of Farnese. Selva del Lamone Regional Nature Reserve: How to visit it To visit the reserve it is necessary to strictly follow the marked paths but we invite the tourist to make use of an expert guide of the place who can also describe the naturalistic and historical beauties of the Lamone Reserve. We point out two of the various itineraries that run through the wood of the Reserve: the Strompia path and the Rosa Creapante path. For all others, please consult the official website of the protected area.
