The "Open Cut" located in Lead SD, 2 miles from Deadwood. Gold was discovered on the site of this former mountain in 1876. Until its closure in 2002, Homestake was the largest and deepest gold mine in North America, producing approximately 41 million ounces of gold in its 126-year lifetime.

A gorgeous little visitor center that talks about the mining history as well as the high-tech physics experiments that are now being conducted almost a mile underground. Great for kids and nerdy adults like me!

FREE My favorite part of the visitor center is the 3-D installation that shows you the extent of the mine shafts. It is said that they run under the entire town of Lead (pronounced LEED). They have tours of the mine that leave the visitor center throughout the day during the busy season (Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend). They have many pictures and videos and information.
