Good place to get on with some work, especially upstairs where there are rows of super old-fashioned desks and high ceilings.

Bristol’s Central Library sits next to the Cathedral and Norman Abbey Gatehouse on College Green and is Grade 1 listed. It’s a gorgeous fantasy of light and space and is Bristol’s most iconic Edwardian building, together with the Royal Infirmary. The Neoclassical interior showcases a turquoise glass mosaic and marble entrance hall, the tunnel vaulted Reference Library and the Old Bristol Room, from the first library in Kings Street. There are spiral staircases to explore and fascinating book transfer boxes, all amidst stunning views of the Cathedral and Council House. It’s the epicentre of civic Bristol and well worth a visit.
