Situated on the bank of the Tagus River, the salt pans are still a living example of what was, for a long time, the main economic activity of Alcochete – the saliculture. After being extracted from the huge tanks, still visible in the Tagus Estuary, the salt was subsequently transported to the pier of Lisbon and exported abroad. Currently, the Canto Navy integrated in the Salinas do Samouco Complex is the only salt saline to produce salt in the Tagus and Alcochete. In winter, the salt pans are an important place, where birds will seek shelter and alternative food to spaces that are already covered with water. In summer, the salt pans are a privileged nesting place, particularly for the long leg Himantopus himantopus.
