A decent alternative to driving into see the Mt. St. Helens volcano. The visitor center is close to I-5. It's not as exciting as actually being at the foot of Mt. St. Helens, but a fine introduction to the events that led up to the eruption on May 18, 1980.
Science, nature, hiking... great spot. I remember being a kid and experiencing Portland's ash filled air after the eruption.
Less than an hour drive away, magical views and stories of a very historic volcanic eruption. Access in winter time can be limited, but you'll truly enjoy the visit.
You'll be amazed by the devastion and the recovery that was caused when the mountain blew on May 18th 1980.
