In the area of the Litija Mine, which ranks among the important mines in Europe for its numerous minerals and limonite stalactites, a geological park is in the process of being formed. Written sources mention the Sitarjevec Mine as early as in the 16th century. In the second half of the 19th century, when the mine was among the largest European mines, a smelter was also built on the left bank of the Sava River, and the ore was transported to the smelter across the river by a cableway. In memory of the first silver produced at the Litija smelter, commemorative coins, the so-called Litija silver coins, were minted in Vienna in 1886.
