Why locals recommend it
A half hour from the city on the north side of the island, this cluster of beaches stretches over nine kilometers of coastline. There are six beaches, but I recommend Megano and especially Tarará, which is known for its beautiful coral reef. This is a popular surf spot, except in April, when the water is usually flat. The beaches at the easternmost end of Las Playas del Este, such as Mar Azul and Guanabo, are also beautiful, but because the water is deep in some places but shallow in others, they’re less suited for surfing.
Tips from locals
