Why locals recommend it

This is a great, refined little restaurant that’s slightly out of the way in Brixton. The food is locally sourced, fresh, and seasonal, but they also have a super-late license, staying open until 3 am on Fridays and Saturdays. It can feel like cramming into a mate’s flat—if your mate were an expert mixologist with the finest spirits known to man, that is. The cocktails are beautiful and really inventive. Look out for the Naughty Piglet, which comes with a square of expertly cooked, melt-in-the-mouth pork belly. Trust me, it works.

An alchemist’s laboratory of tinctures, potions and spirits dominates the tiny and sometimes frenetic front room at Shrub & Shutter, a cocktail bar on Coldharbour Lane. Puns are used with abandon on the drinks list – gimmicky though this may all be, the cocktails are expertly made and will wake you up big time when paired with the bar’s blaring hip hop soundtrack.
