“Brenda and Neil were fantastic hosts, all the thoughtful touches such as fresh eggs from their chickens, homemade kiwi jam, their own apples and fresh Madeleine cakes! Their grapes were delicious too. The space itself is beautiful and we couldn't have found a better way to start our long trip in NZ. It's perfect driving distance to a lot of the attractions of the Northland. On the weekend, the winery and brewery are open until 6pm if you fancy a nice cold beer. One of our highlights was the blueberry farm a couple of kilometres down the main road which does fresh blueberry ice-cream from Nov till April. Brenda and Neil had some great recommendations on local places, we loved visiting the bays they suggested and had them pretty much to ourselves. The house is perfect for unwinding in the evening, with your own deck and BBQ. There's so much wildlife in their garden, we sat out there for hours. Will definitely stay again if and when we get a chance to come back to NZ”

“Judith is a wonderful host and I cannot recommend her place enough. Your space is so private - it's very spacious and also feels like a cozy attic. Judith brought me mandarins from the neighbour's garden and home made walnut cake when I arrived. Then, because the weather was so wet, she appeared with home made tomato soup so I didn't have to go out and get dinner. And she also welcomed my little pooch, who also felt very much at home while we were staying there. Location is an easy drive into town or from here you can head off in all directions to explore the area.”
The ultimate romantic retreat! Secluded Magic Cottage, with its stunning views of the water, is perched on the backs of the peaceful Takou River, hidden beneath ancient Pohutukawa trees. The romantic cabin has a relaxing outdoor claw foot bath overlooking the water; wrap around decks, 5 acres of sub-tropical gardens to explore; a private jetty & boathouse, deserted sandy beaches a short paddle downstream; and 150 acres of organic farmland, native bush and river to fish, swim, kayak and explore.
“The Magic Cottage is a secluded and very nicely presented cottage just by the river, located in a group of other similar properties in what basically amounts to a rainforest garden. It's placed off from the other buildings and nicely shielded from outside view, although its important to note that due to the 'working farm' nature of the area, during the day there can occasionally be the sound of chainsaws, ATVs, passing cars, barking dogs etc - although these didn't really bother us. The provided kayaks and equipment were great, as was the advice and suggestions of places we could take them. The BBQ and other amenities were as described and were functional as expected - although the BBQ has clearly seen better days and is missing a few screws and a wheel! One thing that's important to note is the area has basically no mobile phone coverage on either Spark or Vodafone, and the wifi provided (at the time of writing) does not reach the Magic Cottage, instead only being accessible from the guesthouse, located some 500m away). However once you're within signal range it provided rock solid connectivity - just go easy on it - it's only about 5mbit down / 0.8mbit up and is shared with the other guests, due to the rural location! Overall the Magic Cottage was the secluded and private getaway I hoped it would be - though be aware that the surrounding area is a rather busy place, and you should expect to be 'offline' for most of your stay!”
