Your guide to Southampton

All About Southampton

Located on the banks of Lake Huron, three hours northwest of Toronto, Southampton is a coastal town most known for its iconic lighthouse that sits just offshore on nearby Chantry Island, and is accessible only by boat. The island itself is tiny (less than 20 hectares) and a haven for migrating birds. You’ll see an abundance of species here including herons and egrets. From the island the views back to town and of Lake Huron’s waterfront alone are worth the trip.

Southampton is also known for its historic boardwalk that runs along the shore of Lake Huron. Built over 100 years ago, the boardwalk has seen many improvements including bench seating to relax and take in the glorious views. The boardwalk stretches along the town’s four kilometers of beaches on Lake Huron, which offer soft, white sands and clear, calm waters. The main beach is right downtown near Pioneer Park — where the Saugeen River flows into Lake Huron. Further south is Long Dock Beach and South Beach. All beaches offer pleasant swimming conditions and provide a great launching point for water activities like kayaking and canoeing.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Southampton

Summer offers warm sunny days for enjoying outdoor and beach activities, and there are many delightful cottage rentals in Southampton to enhance your stay. While it does get hot, the nights by the water can provide cooling breezes, so it’s not a bad idea to pack a sweater with your sunscreen and hat. In spring you’ll mostly enjoy pleasant weather, but there is the occasion for rain, and in fall the temperatures can drop a little, so make sure you bring layers. In October, Pumpkin Fest in nearby Port Elgin is always a fun event, with fireworks, a parade, car show, live entertainment, and plenty of pumpkin-related activities. Wintertime in Southampton offers the perfect opportunity to curl up indoors in front of a fire, while watching the changeable weather pass over the lake.

Top things to do in Southampton

The Boardwalk

Wander Southampton’s boardwalk, which stretches along Lake Huron, offering amazing views of Chantry Island and the lighthouse. Along the way there are lots of benches to stop and enjoy the views, as well as signs offering interesting facts about the area, including the location of a shipwreck in the dunes. Arrive in the early morning when you’ll have it to yourself and be treated to a glorious sunrise over the lake. Come back in early evening and grab a giant ice cream cone from one of the many confectionery shops and settle in for a spectacular sunset.

Fairy Lake

Just minutes from the shops downtown you’ll find tranquil Fairy Lake. Take a gentle stroll along the one-kilometer trail around the lake, where you’re likely to spot an abundance of wildlife, including swans and ducks. On sunny days turtles usually sunbathe on the giant logs, so keep an eye for them on your walk. And chances are you’ll spot the huge carp, as they bob their heads up above the water's surface.

Chantry Island

Take the 15-minute boat ride to Chantry Island, home to the historic lighthouse. Once you step foot on the island, you’ll enjoy great views of Southampton and Lake Huron. Climb to the top of the lighthouse and those sweeping views become even more impressive. You can learn about the lighthouse’s role in early maritime navigation and in guarding the entrance to the port. Plus, you’ll get an insight into the 50 known shipwrecks surrounding the island. It’s also a great spot for birdwatching with many species living here, including cormorants and egrets.
